Need to replace the spider gasket, how to drain water from the multiport valve?

I need to replace the spider gasket, but the water level continues to rise to the level of the gasket. I tried opening the strainer basket on the pump but that didn't work. How can I get the water out of the valve?
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

What is the make and model of the filter?
Is the filter above or below the waterline in the pool?

I'd just drain the filter, this should lower the water level below the MPV. After draining, any residual water in the MPV can be wet-vac'd out of the MPV and wiped with a rag for any residual.

Most tritons have a bleeder valve integral to the top. Open that valve, and put your MPV in the filter mode. That should lower the water level to the bottom of the filter outlet.
