Hi all, I am seeking advice on which pool heater we should replace our Raypak with. Our Raypak was great the first season we used it. 2nd season we opened the inside bottom pan had started to rust. The pool company we bought it from came out and fixed it. All was fine until the end of 3rd season of use (last summer). It was completely rusted out and quite dangerous. We are done with both after numerous calls to Raypak and the pool company and not getting any response from either. Apparently, this is common with Raypak. So, now we need a new gas heater and I don't even know where to begin. Do they all have this rust issue or is it just Raypak? I'll start looking at Hayward, and all the companies but would love to get some suggestions.

Raypak makes an excellent heater. The rusting is likely due to improper installation or use.

What model Raypak heater are we discussing?
Raypak has natural draft gas pool heaters that are more prone to rusting then forced draft heaters with blowers like the Raypak Avia and all gas heaters now from Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. Most gas pool heaters today are sealed burner forced draft heaters. I suspect you will have a better experience with one of them.
Which one is best for you depends on your usage. Tell us about your pool and spa and your heater usage.

It is a 406A heater. I don't know if it is a sealed burner forced drafter heater or not. As for usage we heat the water up for a 4 hours for two day when we open in May and then again towards the end of September for just a few hours on the weekends. We really don't use the heater a whole lot but need it. (We live in NJ)

406A is a natural draft heater where the burners are open to the elements.
You should be running the heater for 15 to 30 minutes at least once a week to burn off moisture that causes rusting. Running a heater often extends its life. Let a heater sit unused and it will rust away, especially an open natural draft heater.

Well, it looks like that is what has happened. Now on to a new heater. Thank you for the Further Reading articles above. We will have to figure out if we go for Pentair, Hayward or Jandy next.
AJW22 how do you use your Pentair Mastertemp 400BTU Nat Gas Heater? Does this heater have the blower on it? Are you happy with it?

I like it. They last 7 to 10 years. When it dies I will get another.
It is run every few days while the pool is open.
