Need help with out of control pool...

Picked up more CYA today and vacuumed another 8 inches out. Mostly gray with some spots of greenish gray. Still can't see the bottom but I can see where the water reflects more blue.

I'm letting the chlorine levels drop for the party on Sat. I don't know what safe swim level is. I've honestly have to say if I had this to do over again, I'd just have drained it and started over. We've had about three weeks were we couldn't swim and all the chemicals in... and we're still not done. I'm hoping that in the next week it will finally be clear, but if it's not I might drain it at least half way or all and "start over", I can't justify putting so much time and money into a pool we can't swim in. Swim season for us is basically July and August, it's half over... May and June it thunderstorm season, and Sept we start getting frost on the ground, it's not unusual for us to have snow in mid October. I don't know if it always takes this long to clear a pool or if mine is stupid or I'm doing something wrong...

Good note: The girls swam tonight, and stirred everything up. NO green color appeared at all. This was after I vacuumed. After vacuuming I found some clumps of green in the basket. I checked the ladder, I've been sweeping the sides and especially along the cove where the wall meets the floor, so I have no idea where it's coming from. It might be possible that those chunkers came out of the vacuum hose though. I vacuumed two days before I believe? And it's been hotter than anything here, and I don't think the hose got drained ( looks around for someone to blame that on, but finds no one )

So, it appears that at this point the green is completely gone! Even when the pool is stirred up good. Now... visibility, which should come with filtering and vacuuming right?

After the party should I bring the Chlorine levels back up? Maybe tomorrow night I should do the overnight test and see how that goes first?

This has taken longer than normal but in the beginning you didn't have a good kit and so were just guessing at the chem levels.

It's ok to swim up to shock level for your CYA level.

I hope you did the overnight loss test last night. The filter just has to have time to filter it all out.

Very blue today, had to add more water, as well. Visibility... increasing. I could almost make out the bottom rung this morning. Kids... very happy they are currently "stirring" the pool again, lol.

Today while "stirring" the pool did not get any cloudier than before the girls swam, That should mean that for the most part the floor is clean!

Waiting for the sun to go down and I'll be doing the OCLT.

Well... we lost 2 FC's and CC was at .5 ( I actually think it would be .25 if you micromanage) both time!

Night - 7 FC, .5 CC
Morning- 5 FE, .5 CC

Added more CYA this morning.

Is using a pantyhose acceptable for a sock? I had a couple socks that came with the pool, but they're overly decrepit!

I pulled the ladder and it was clean. The is an opening on the bottom but it's capped.

The sun was down because I almost forgot. Could it be due to the low CYA levels? I'm going to work on getting those up tomorrow. Added 1 lbs yesterday.

An overnight loss can only be from organics, not from sun/low CYA. Well, it could also be from testing error. If you are not using a FAS-DPD test kit, your test results could be off by that much easily. Either way, you are making great strides.

With the algae pretty much gone, and the chlorine at a good level for your CYA, the kids should be fine swimming, just keep vacuuming and filtering.

And yes, pantyhose works very well with pools.

A couple questions...

We are having troubles with red eyes, the girls of course open their under water, but I don't and mine are feeling very dry. I have chronic dry eyes anyway, but they are now red and very grainy feeling. My skin is also feeling very dry... like all the moisture was sucked out of my skin. Any thoughts on this? I have the SWG, I need to pick up salt tomorrow and get that running again, I had it off per suggestion, and haven't turned it back on yet.

Is this possibly from all of the chemicals? Something else in the water? Otherwise the water feels very clean. Today again no green stirred up during swimming and it was swam in vigorously. Still not clear full, but clean, and blue looking, the bottom felt pretty clean, with some areas of minor "debris" , but no slimy areas etc. Tomorrow I'm going to add some more CYA. I was at 20, I added 1 lb. how much more should I add?

Sorry, didn't meant to "disappear"... okay you guys probably enjoyed the quietness!

Today we were clear enough that I could see feet... not totally clear, but was getting there. Because along with seeing feet I found the ( hopefully ) last problem... super stuck green... Although I'd been brushing this stuff is on there so tight it's like it's welded to the liner and it hadn't been clear enough for me to see it. I brushed hard and got some of it loose ( of course clouding the pool again ). It's not solid, it's various "spots" all the way around the bottom 1' of the liner, some spots are 6" big, but most are smaller. On what I did get off it would leave a "residue" or deposit.

Sooo... what's the best way to pry these guys off? I was thinking gently using a scrubby, like a scotch pad, or maybe a stiff short bristled brush? Any suggestions? We're running to town today, and then the girls will get some great "family fun time" to use their goggles and flippers! I have flippers, but no goggles. So I guess I better find some.

Brushing, brushing, brushing. Once you brush the top off you can hold a trichlor puck on them to fade the staining and finish them off.

You can try a stiffer brush than normal but be extra careful. Keep your FC at shock level.

Once you pass the OCLT you may want to hold your FC a little higher than min to help fade the staining left.
