Need Help! Green and cloudy pool!

Hi all, I’m new to owning a pool. We put ours up last year right before winter so we basically just winterized it. We opened the pool in may and my impatient fiancé dumped all of the debris into the pool before pumping all of the water off. My pool is currently a teal green and extremely cloudy.

We have been shocking the pool basically every other night. We added 4 bags of shock about 3 nights ago, two bags of shock 2 nights ago and last night we added another 4 bags each 1 lb. This morning the pool looked a lot lighter shade of green and the FC level was about 10. I just checked the levels at about 5:25 pm and the readings were:
Hardness-250
FC-0.5
Total chlorine-0.5
Cyanuric-0
Alkalinity-180
PH-8.4
(After I texted I added about 1lb of PH reducer)

I plan on doing the SLAM method and all advice would be appreciated! Thanks I’m advance! I also attached a picture of the pool from yesterday 06/19.

Welcome to TFP! Stop with the bags of shock. That stuff isn't gong to do it. You're going to need a good amount of liquid chlorine to perform the SLAM Process. You will also require either a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test it. Hopefully you have one of those as well. If you follow the SLAM Process page carefully it will work.

You also have the option of exchanging some water before starting the SLAM Process if water is cheap and to help you get ahead of the algae a bit. But liquid chlorine applied at the proper level per the FC/CYA Levels (SLAM level) and maintained that way is the key.

Thanks so much for the reply!! I just discovered this forum last night and placed the order for a TF-100 test kit. Hopefully will be here soon. Unfortunately, we are unable to exchange water due to only having a well and water transport being weeks out.

Last night, I poured in 128 oz of liquid chlorine and it seems to be looking slightly clearer this morning! I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel lol. I tested this morning and here are the results:
06/21 Wednesday 7:22 AM

Hardness-100

FC-5

Total chlorine- 10

Cyanuric-0

Alkalinity- 80

PH- 8.2

I’m wondering if I should add stabilizer due to the cyanuric being 0 and if I need to add ph decreaser and when I should do it. All answers are appreciated! Thanks so much!

You do want to have at least 30 ppm of stabilizer. You can also try to bring the pH down (wiht muriatic acid) to the lower 7 range. About 7.2 - 7.4 if you can. Don't worry about that being too accurate right now until you get your TF-100 though. Once you receive the test kit, run a new (full) set of tests and post back. We'll walk you through the steps of what to do next in an accurate manner. You'll be very happy with your TF-100. Greta product.

Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. After soaking for about 20-30 minutes, squeeze the sock often to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

I’m feeling very discouraged. I purchased two pool vacuums, one is a automatic robot and another is a automatic that connects to the return jet. I was so excited to use the automatic pool vacuum due to the reviews it had and unfortunately it barely sucked up anything. I know my pool has a lot of debris and when it was finished I was so upset to see that there was maybe two leaves that it had picked up. The other vacuum does not have the right fitting to attach to the return jet.

I’ll include a picture of the pool from this morning as I am continuing the slam. I could really use some encouragement because I feel like I’m going in circles and that nothing I do seems to be working. Thanks in advance..

What bagged shock were you using? If it was dichlor you probably do not actually have 0 CYA. Was it cal-hypo?
