This have been a long time coming. I left my pool for quite some time because the maintenance was costly (think when chemical prices skyrocketed) but now I am looking to clean up my pool. The pool is basically empty sans a few feet of algae water.

I assume I will need to wash the sides down to clean them but my main concern is the drain. Would I need someone to clear the rest of it so then I can fill my pool?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do not bother with the main drain.
No real need to wash down the sides. Pump out the nasty water with a submersible pump, fill the pool, and balance. Follow the SLAM Process once full to clear out any remaining organics.

I think I have a bigger problem now. I noticed some chunks from my steps and a lot of hairline cracks.

I take it if I don’t take care of those cracks I will have a bigger problem?

Leaving a plaster pool empty in the desert normally sees the plaster become cracked and likely will delaminate when water is added. You can try to add water and see if it stays together, but the only long term resolution is to chip out the old plaster and do a new plaster job.
