Need Guidance!!

Just want to make sure I’m on track. I guess I thought I would see some difference today, but not yet.

It’s only been about 18 hours and overall I’ve added 395 oz of 10% chlorine.

Does it seem right that my pool color hasn’t changed?

I’m thinking about adding some DE to my sand filter as recommended on this site to speed up the filtering process.

I had heard previously that adding DE to above ground pool pumps can make the sand clumpy and not to use it.

Just wanted to verify adding DE is suggested even for above ground pool sand filters?

A filter is a filter. Said filter does not know how it is marketed and to which type of pool owners. (y)

Sound like someone blaming the ruined flocc sand on the DE. Disregard anything you've heard previously. 98% of it is junk. Lol. Especially these days where any yahoo can stand on a virtual soapbox and preach to the world that a piece of copper pipe in his skimmer meant he didn't need chlorine.

Hey friends, I was reading through posts and read it’s safe to swim during SLAM as long as I can see the bottom of the deep end, which we don’t have. Great news as I cant vacuum very well without getting in!

The kids are begging to get in too. The pools still green and you can’t see the bottom, but everyone stands taller than the water. Is that safe for kids too, or only recommended for adults?

That should be fine. Give them all scrubbing pads and let them help you with the SLAM Process. :)

It's a safety concern if anyone has to locate a disabled swimmer on the bottom (God forbid) You don't need to be able to read the label on their suits, but you need to need able to know they are under, exactly over *there*. Or if somebody has to find you. Seconds turn into minutes and things go south QUICK once panic sets in. :)

More questions!!

The pool is finally starting to look better!! Still green but I can see the bottom.

However, I’m getting some strange fc readings. Yesterday I had my mom check it and she got a 22. (Our SLAM is 20) I assumed she mad a mistake because when I checked a few hours later is was 13.5. But later in the day I got a 20. So I cleaned my tube with bleach and retested and got 20 again. So I brushed the pool for a bit and retested and then got a 17. This morning I went out there and stopped counting when I again got a 20 reading.

As you can see in the pictures my pump is shooting water out strong, and the water looks to be moving well.

You can also see the water level is low. Could that be why my readings are so high, maybe I’m overshocking for my water level? (Adding water now) Or maybe there’s not enough movement? I want to be sure im not doing something wrong.

Thanks again for all the help!

I would add a bit more water so that the return jet is submerged. Allowing it to create all that aeration will increase your PH quickly. As for the FC, consistency is key. Grab the water sample from the same pool location, pool water should always be moving (during SLAM), and take your time with the testing. Are you using a speedstir?

The speed stir, or whatever comes with the kit, was on back order, so I haven’t gotten it yet.

It’s filling now, hopefully that’s my problem. I always take the sample from the same spot, elbow deep. We haven’t been in the pool so movement is only from pump and brushing…so maybe I need to brush more until it’s used again…

SLAM is going great, I’m so greatful for you guys and this awesome site!

I have a question about the 3” pucks. I understand why they’re not preferred, but a few weeks before I found this site I bought a $200 bucket of them.
Do you all think I could be successfully using them if I test my cya everyday?

Each 3 oz puck should net you this in 8k gallons

Besides raising the CYA, they may or may not match the UV loss, leaving you low at times.

They'd likely sell near what you paid for them on FB marketplace or the offer up app. Normally I'd say keep them for vacations and openings as they last near forever when stored dry and cool, but it will take you near forever to use that much in such a small pool.
