Hi everyone! We have a Hayward single speed pump, a Hayward SWG (I believe it's Aqua Rite), a timer for both and we want to get a heater and automation. I have the following questions:
1. We have a booster pump installed but no longer used as we recently switched from Polaris pressure cleaner to a robotic cleaner. Should we ask the pool guy to remove it? Why?

2. The pool guy recommended the Jandy heater but after reading these forums, we want to go with a Raypak heater as it's the most recommended. We were quoted $3,900 for equipment and labor. We would need to pay an extra $1,600 to someone else to do the gas connection. Sounds good? The natural gas city company said our meter should be able to handle 400k btu. Is an inspection always or sometimes required? What is that dependant on? Anything else I should ask the pool guy?

3. Regarding automation, I do not know much about it but we want to control it from our phones while away. Is it ok to tackle that later or should we do it at the time of installing the heater? The pool guy says it takes quite some time because they are not in stock at this time. Which brand should we ask him to get? Will it control the pump, SWG and heater? Will we get rid of the timer? Will it connect to wifi or..? Anything else I should know?

4. Do these jobs usually provide a contract? My husband has contacted 2 or 3 companies and they just provide an invoice and they have not fully convinced me.
If anyone has a great pool guy/company in the Charlotte, NC area that would be amazing.
Thanks very much!

Hello! For question #1, either way. It can stay or be removed. Some leave it for a while in case they need additional circulation for something, or if later they install a fountain, slide, or something of the sort. Some just pull it to be done with it.

I'll have to tag @ajw22 for most of your questions as he's very experienced with much of what you are asking.

Have a great weekend. :swim:

Hi everyone! We have a Hayward single speed pump, a Hayward SWG (I believe it's Aqua Rite), a timer for both and we want to get a heater and automation. I have the following questions:

How old is your Hayward SS pump?

What model number is the pump?

1. We have a booster pump installed but no longer used as we recently switched from Polaris pressure cleaner to a robotic cleaner. Should we ask the pool guy to remove it? Why?

Doesn't matter. If it is not leaking you can leave it and a small amount fo water will flow through it as another return. Or you can have it removed.

2. The pool guy recommended the Jandy heater but after reading these forums, we want to go with a Raypak heater as it's the most recommended. We were quoted $3,900 for equipment and labor. We would need to pay an extra $1,600 to someone else to do the gas connection. Sounds good?

Sounds reasonable.

The natural gas city company said our meter should be able to handle 400k btu. Is an inspection always or sometimes required?
Check with your local building department for what permits and inspections may be needed.

What is that dependant on? Anything else I should ask the pool guy?

Depends on your local codes.

3. Regarding automation, I do not know much about it but we want to control it from our phones while away. Is it ok to tackle that later or should we do it at the time of installing the heater?

Does not really matter.

The pool guy says it takes quite some time because they are not in stock at this time.

Availability of pool equipment is an issue right now.

Which brand should we ask him to get?

Your next pump will be a VS pump since sale of pumps over 1HP will be prohibited as of July 2021. Your VS pump should be from the same manufacturer as your automation. So you need to decide if you want to commit to Hayward or Pentair.

Look at the Hayward OmniHub...

Or the Pentair IntelliConnect...

Will it control the pump, SWG and heater? Will we get rid of the timer? Will it connect to wifi or..?
Yes, yes, yes.

Anything else I should know?

4. Do these jobs usually provide a contract? My husband has contacted 2 or 3 companies and they just provide an invoice and they have not fully convinced me.

All depends on how the company wants to do business. If you want some contract terms tell them what you want.

Thanks so much. We are out of town but will definitely respond with pump model next week. I am not sure how old it is but we have had the house for 5 years, just changed the sand this year for first time. I will read through the posts you shared. Thanks again!
