Need a new pump, confused about VS, and compatibility with existing timer and SWG

I'm pretty sure that my existing pump has died, and I keep hearing that a Variable Speed pump is what I should buy. Is it really much better than a basic single or dual speed pump? I'd like to avoid the high-end pumps that cost thousands, but I need something strong enough to pull my Kreepy Crawler (cleaner) around the pool and provide flow for the SWG. Any recommendations for pumps would be appreciated. Also, with a VS pump, will I still need my existing timer, or will I just bypass that when I install the VSP?

You cannot purchase pool pumps that are single speed above 1 thp anymore. Those you see for sale are underpowered to meet the DOE regulations.

Look at a Calimar 3 hp VS pump. You will not need the timer for it, but you will still need to use the timer for your SWCG.

Definitely no single speeds. I have a 2-speed that I run on low 24/7/365. VSPs are nice for programming and you can actually dial the rpm down a bit more than a 2-speed. Costs of VSPs have come down a bit, so it's really a matter of cost, pool needs, and compatibility (electrical and plumbing).

Thanks! I just ordered the Calimar 3hp VS pump. I think I understand why I still need the timer for the SWCG, and wiring for the different setup seems clear. I really appreciate your help!

Thanks! Hopefully the new pump will be easy to install. I plan to try the 24/7/365 method.
