Trouble free Pals:

I have a nasty brown stain below one of my returns in the shallow end of my Pebble Sheen pool. The pool is 18 years old and has been terrific. I usually ignore the pool other than a dichlor float during the winter and then start opening the pool around April. I live in Northern California. Well I am paying this year because there is a nasty brown stain in the Pebble Sheen. It brushed off a bit with a metal brush, but appears to be in the Pebble Sheen at this point. I have a little stain remover cup like thing where you can put in some muriatic acid, and then use it at the end of a pole and hold it on the stain. It seems to lighten it a bit, but is very labor intensive and the stain is big! I am including a photo here. Any thoughts on what to do here??

Looks like metals staining - iron or copper.

Crush up some vitamin C tablets into a paste and put it in s sock and rub it on the stain. If it lifts it is iron staining. If it gets darker it is copper staining.

Ascorbic Acid Treatment - Further Reading For iron staining

OK, excellent advice! I am going to give the vitamin C trick a try soon. If it works, I assume I could use ascorbic acid in a sock and spot treat the stain.

Show the system.

Check the cell and look into the pipe before and after the cell for stains.

Pull the cartridges and show them before and after cleaning.

Post a full set of readings.

OK crushed up some tablets and put in a sock and tried a spot treatment. It was like a miracle! The stain gone in seconds. Totally amazing.

Be careful, as you now have iron in your pool water that may redeposit on the surfaces.

If so, you will either need to periodically use a sequestrant to keep the iron in solution or drain the pool and fill it with iron free water after you lift the stains.

Exactly. I put one of those metal removal pads in the skimmer. Don’t know if it will help, but it might. And the pool is Pebblesheen, so if there is some light stain it will not be noticeable. We shall see! Don’t want to drain the pool and am hoping to avoid the whole sequestering process.
