Mystery in my Spa's Filter Sock

Hello All:

I have a 500 gallon Aqua-Terra spa; original owner. Three years old. Use on average 1-2 times/week by me/wife/10-year old daughter. Once in a blue moon one of my daughter’s friends but no one else. We always try to “be clean” when using it (shower, no sun lotions, etc.); chemicals always spot on (chlorine). I change the water about every 6 months (just did it today, along with an ahh-some flush & new filter (I always use a new filter at the water change), last time was about 9 months ago- longest ever). It is once again perfect. I really have to stick to 6 months as the jet pressure is noticeably better.

So what’s wrong: well, I also use a skimmer sock as I like to keep everything super clean. I notice that when the water changes are less frequent, I have a bunch of what looks like Crud in the sock after about 4 weeks (I replace it each month anyway). It isn’t Crud, per se, but it looks like brown sand and silt and smells like a cross between Crud & the bio film ahh-some brings up when purging (note there is never a negative odor in the pool water). I have used ahh-some since the beginning and really only noticed this in the past 6 months or so. The ‘Crud’ is soft, brown and mushy. The only added chemical I use is once in a while an enzyme cleaner that makes the water smell great. It is almost like it is maybe binding dirt and oils and it ends up in the skimmer. I just started using the enzyme about a year ago so it’s the only thing that changed when the ‘Crud’ started happening; I did not experience this the first two years of ownership. Any ideas? I guess I could stop using the enzyme and see if it stops, but I really don’t use more than a capful once a week.

Thanks for any & all suggestions!

I think you are seeing the results of the enzyme cleaner doing its thing. The enzyme cleaner scavenges up crud from the water and spa surfaces and it has to go somewhere. If you didn't have the skimmer sock it would go into your filter and be cleaned out when you clean your filter.

I have never seen something like that from an enzyme, but they are not frequently used in my experience. It does seem to be the most likely cause from your description, so I would stop using it and find out. If it is removing that much crud from your water I would keep using it, and stop filling from the river. ;)
Give us an update after your experiment.
