My SLAM and Filtration Issues

Thanks Robert... Yeah! I really want to try the bags. I ordered everything and I'm going to install it myself and see how it works. I got only one, though I have 3 return vets. I just want to see if it works. I'll keep you all posted for sure. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah I have seen the same exact setup on a friend's pool before, only I think that they had a Hayward Super Flow 2 pump. For the last several years I've been trying to convince her to come over to the TFP methods, but she can't be bothered with taking 30 minutes out of her life for me to explain proper water chemistry to her, and has already gone through the expense of replacing her pool liner as of last year as a result of running extremely high chlorine levels for years by just throwing the trichlor Pucks in the skimmer basket as many as six at a time, and hiring someone to come in and maintain her pool lol..., she also installed a SWCG as of last year. My wife and I and our friends stay at her house up to 3 times a year, and when we stay there for the extended weekends I'm usually in charge of maintaining the pool. Funny.... 10 years ago I didn't know a single thing about pools and I was still the one attempting to try and figure her pool out.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the throttling. To go to the trouble of installing two ball check valves, glue and seal the pipes and valves, test for leaks, etc, just to throttle water flow for week or so to clear the pool utilizing slower filtration. Its probably not worth it.

Whether the slower filtration method works, it's really only in theory as far as I know. I can't substantiate scientific evidence-based proof for it.

I can only say I've tried it, and my reasons for trying just to even out pressure for longer pump time run at slower rates, just to see if it works because my pump motor is only one speed. Those are the trade-offs of slower filtration. It takes much longer to get things clearer. But slower filtration is only purposeful when you have efficient micron mediums like cartridge or DE to do it. Again this can all be variables depending on the power of your pump and setup. Some pumps are underpowered for the size gallons of pools, some pumps are overpowered for the size gallons of the pool. Pumps are typically depicted in GPH, or GPM, they have flow rates and it is also measured in square footage as well.

Once you are clear and water is balanced, that much amount of overkill filtration is no longer necessary.

I only do it because I have an above ground pool that's not that big, it's only 7200 gallons and my pump and filtration including flow rate is a little overkill. 1.5 hp Hayward Matrix Flow because I have a lot of debris falling into the pool cause I'm next to the woods, and the pool and my pump came with the house.

Try using the bags and see if it suits your purpose, and kindly let us know the results.

Maybe more than one monster!

I don't have a pic from yesterday or this morning as yesterday crammed with my son's birthday, a short thunderstorm, and my Cub Scout Den's advancement ceremony, but I've been keeping the water circulating, brushing regularly, and keeping SLAM up, along with an occasional backwash and a cup of DE. Every day it looks a little less green and a little more milky. I could faintly make out my brush at the bottom of the deep end this morning, but can't really see the main drain down there yet. Shouldn't be long now.

Anyway, both 5 micron bags are in Little Rock as of last night, so I'm hoping they'll make it out for delivery today, even though they're not scheduled to get here until tomorrow. Both elbows are at the house, awaiting the bags. I'll give another update with pics once everything comes in and gets up and running.

Yeah at last count there are 3 monsters created! lol

My elbows will be here today, then to the parts store with elbow in hand to get the right sized hose clamp then pics of assembly and install.

My pool clearing more and more each day as well. My little sand filter is just working and working. I have not backwashed since 10am on 5/14/2018, PSI holding right at 10psi and I am letting it do its thing and trying to follow the Manufacture's suggested backwash level (from the owners manual) IF it ever gets there.

I suspect once these duda bags get on there it may clear up very quickly and I plan to take before and after pictures of that as well.

Cheers,

Looky Looky what just showed up at my home! Yeehaaa

Dudas are up and running! Got my bags over the lunch break and put them on first and third returns, and the polaris running off the middle return, with the stair returns closed off. I also closed the main drain a bit to keep my PSI at roughly 1.5 above clean running pressure, so overall it is up to about 19 from 17.5.

Even leaving the main drain all the way open wouldn't spike the PSI more 2-3, so I don't think the initial bump will be enough for anyone to worry much about. We'll see how quickly the things fill up!

THATS GRREAATT !!!! YEEEEHAAWW!!!
If you are maintaining the same amount of pressure overnight for 12 to 24 hours before you even installed the bags, it sounds like the sand filters got what it could, and quit.
The good news is now you don't have to keep adding DE and keep backwashing. The bags will mechanically filter just as effectively at 5 micron.
Lets see what gunk comes out of the water and into the bags, and how fast the water clears. The skimmer sock also helps collect the gunk too.

Since I am limited in experience with in-ground pools, other than basic maintenance....

Madyogi....given you have a 1.5 hp Century pump. I was attempting to determine your GPM's or GPH online, just to see what your water turnover rate could possibly be in 8 hours or 12 hours. And came to realize Century is an older pump, that is typically replaced by Hayward Superpump and other variants by popular demand. . I understand you are running 20k gallons. Also have me curious now what your Hayward sand filtration rates are in sq. ft. ?

Either way, should be interesting to see how fast this clears. Don't forget babysit the pressure build up every hour or so until you are confident pressure rise is less frequent, and holds lower over longer periods of time until water clears. Also maintain the SLAM until 3 steps of OCLT is passed.

Just out of curiosity madyogi... Any reason why the bag is facing upwards?

No particular reason other than the fact that when I first got them running, they were facing down and kinked a bit, so I spun the elbows a little to open the "necks" of the bags more, and they end up more or less straight up. Also better for the picture, though I imagine I'm raising my pH pretty quick with the potential aeration, huh?

We inherited everything from the previous owner about 1.5 years ago. From what I understood, he had the pump replaced at the start of summer 2016 (we moved in late that summer). I've been trying to figure the GPH and GPM out as well, and trying to understand this thread. It's sinking in slowly, but that's some dense info! I did find out for sure that I have a Hayward S244T, which based on the manual here, has effective filtration area of 3.1 sq feet? I'm trying to use that information with the charts in the hydraulics thread to get a better grasp on turnover rate and the overall appropriateness of my gear, but it's coming in fits and starts, if you know what I mean.

Sorry gang, got tied up, I did manage to get my clamps but now that it is so late, I am going to wait and do pics and set these up in the am. That way I am up to check them every hour for the first few hours to manage any psi issues that "may" arise and actually be able to see in the daylight.

Have a good evening.

Awesome...thanks for posting pics of the hose clamp and the setup...I'm still waiting on my Duda bags. Got the 90 degree angle today... just about did a back flip... I can't wait for the install...tomorrow feels like forever for my Duda bags to come in...eerrgghhh.... I'll post some pics once I get everything going...

Here they are in action. Backwashed as PSI came up finally to 14psi, got a good dirty backwash, that felt good.

Installed 1 bag on each return and will check on them each hour for the first few.

I did not add any Fiber Clear after the backwash, all Filtration improvement going forward will be due to Hairnet+Sand Filter+ 5 Micron Duda Diesel Bags.

I remain in SLAM Process

I know exactly how you felt. I was so excited! I am very happy, just checked on the pool, let me say, I do not think Robert oversold this idea, I am seeing some appreciable visibility improvements that I did not notice this morning and it's only been 6 hours.

Yep Yep madyogi, that is noticeable! Awesome!

Just got my Duda bag.... It looks kind off big. Did I get the right size. Mmmmm... even after I cut the ring off of it with a scissor, it still looks big...Doesn't it? 4"x14" Diameter/Width... It's all new to me... I'm sure I got the right one. Now I need to get the clamp.

Yep looks good to me Mendy. If you look at my pics, you will see, I folded over the excess and slid the clamp over that. It's been working good. Curbing my enthusiasm for now. (Personally I think it's working awesome but.. AM picture will be my pudding for proof)
