My pump motor came with a 220 plug and id like to switch it with a regular 3 prong plug. I was told i could cut it and splice it

Are you keeping the motor at 220V?
You should not have a 120V standard 3 prong outlet wired for 220V.

As @ajw22 said, you LIKELY have a 220v motor, you cannot plug it into a 120v outlet.
It is POSSIBLE that your motor is dual voltage motor. Please post the Make and Model # of the pump...not the motor.
If it is a 220v only, you have two choices, return it and get a 115V pump, or have a 220v circuit installed by a competent electrician.
