My pool is a green swamp. Should I shock with Chlorine before turning pump on?

Last 3 or 4 times I've closed the pool I have opened it up in spring and it was crystal clear save a few muck and leaves. This time it is a green swamp. It looks so bad I hate to put my hands in the water and get the plugs. I also hate to turn the pump on and run it through the system. So, my question is is there any advantage to shocking it first with copious amounts of chlorine and letting it sit a few hours before getting the pump primed and running?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I personally see no advantage. You'll need to get the chlorine mixed, and the pump is a lot easier on the back than a brush. But you'll have to brush a bunch anyway. If it's so disgusting you hesitate to reach in, it'll be a few days before it isn't, and that's a heckuva lot of brushing to mix a heckuva lot of bleach.
