No pool pump running to mix the water which is being exchanged. The sump pump obvs has to be running.

With automation or timers the pool pump may 'magically' turn on so Wireform was saying to kill power at the pump breaker so it stayed off no matter what.

The pump has been delivered so I start testing the timing and get that worked out.

My best slam tips:

1. Buy more chlorine than you think you will need, you can always take it back, and trips to the store mid-slam suck.
2. If you can hack it, test every hour and replenish to your target SLAM FC level. Will make it go faster. Don't know your SLAM target, go here and click on SLAM -->FC/CYA Levels
3. Watch your filter pressure and clean it when it rises 25%. Do you have DE on hand to refill filter when you backwash? When you do, use 80% of the recommended load after you backwash (some will stay in the filter).
4. Scrub, Scrub, Scrub. Everything. Have lights that are niches, take them out and scrub. Waterfeatures? Run them too, and scrub in and around them. Ladder? Take it out an scrub inside the tubes.
5. Print out the SLAM instructions and read them. Three times. You will say "aha" every time you read them.

Napco Chemical in Spring. You have to get your own refillable containers and check with them on what they require. You may find they have great prices.

You should also check out Pinch a Penny. They have an exchange program. You buy the jug and just exchange for full one.

Sweet. Check the date codes, you want 3 months or less or it gets degraded. Basically, today is the 218th day of 22, so the code for today is 22 218 XXXX. Google 'Julian date' from the store the first few times until you know by just looking.

Thanks for the tips on the date codes! I found all the newer stuff (less than 10 days old) hidden behind all the old stock.

Update on my water exchange - I've dropped my CYA level from 100/110 down to a strong 50 (as far as I can tell, the CYA testing is seems to be a little subjective at first). Based on my flow calculations, I have exchanged 7500 gallons which is about half the pool volume so it all checks out.

Although I have done my best to equalize the water flow I am draining a smidge quicker that refill. I will have to add ~6" back which should further reduce my CYA, but I dont know by how much.

Fill to the middle of your skimmer opening.

40-50 is great.

I think I am going to do one final test, then stop draining and fill. Then test for a final CYA to get my FC level identified to SLAM.

CYA is 40 maybe a touch lower, and I still need to add back 5-6” so I think it’s where it needs to be! From over 100 to nearly ideal for the slam. That’s progress!

Once we get the water level correct I will do a full test and post my measurements. From there I will adjust pH if necessary then slam.

Update! The pool is refilled - testing is complete - and I have added my first round of bleach to SLAM.

Test results:

FC - 1 - post refill
ph - 7.6 - I added some acid magic to bring this down to SLAM specs prior to adding bleach.
TA - 120
CH - 175
CYA - 40

Good to know! My primary concern was testing my FC to SLAM. Getting more practice testing was helpful for me at least.

Since turnover in pool water is a myth you need some good time for all the water to mixed well. Most likely you'll be close but for instance the CYA can be less then 40 but if you slam for the given CYA you definitely have enough FC for the slam.
