With a starting level of 1ppm chlorine, for 15,000 gallons, to get to shock level you require:
Either 1.75 gallons of 12% bleach/chlorine
or 2 gallons of 10%
or 3.25 gallons of 7%
based on results from The Pool Calculator.

thanks -just dumped in 2x of the 182 oz (1.42Gal) at 7%... used the bleach calc app.
my filter mentions 120GPM max... so i'm guessing it'll take the chlorine 2-3 hours to fully circulate?

HAHA! good point. i suppose i *could* go out there in rain gear to an umbrella. OR I'll make a resolution to wake up bright n' early and do it before work. it's gonna be a long night either way, got a presentation that needs to be done by tomorrow.

still cloudy. no i haven't done the overnight... just tested after 24hrs of bleachin and CYA. i need to find that again.. i think tomorrow morning, if the kids stay in bed long enough, i should be able to get out there.
so - get to shock first before I do the overnight test? do i need to do all the tests each time, or just the chlorine related ones daily and then the others somewhere in betwwen?

You don't worry about anything but FC and CC during the shock process. Once the algae is gone, the rest is easy to shape up. When the pool starts looking better and the CC stays down, then you worry about passing the overnight test.armedmetallica said:

thanks - i got discouraged, as i haven't seen much improvement in the last 2 days. i did throw in more bleach just now. odd thing, i saw a mist of sorts like morning dew or fog rising from the pool water. is this normal? it's pretty cold outside (i think in the low 60s now).

i don't see any algae that's visible, and my CCs haven't moved from 0.5 since i started. it's getting slightly clearer. i just dumped in more bleach.
when doing the test, can i swirl every 5 drops or so in the beginning? (since I know my FC will be higher than 15)?

update:
another test shows 21.5 FC and still turns a tinge pink for the cc test (meaning i still need 1 drop to clear it back up)... does that indicate that I should be adding another dose of bleach?

1 drop for the CC does not matter. If the pool is clear, and more your CC are low, sounds like the OCLT is the next step.
thanks - it's clear-ish or clear-er... lol it's still not crystal clear. every time i go near the pool, i'm itching to get in!

at 24 FC earlier today... that step to check for CC, the color seems lighter and lighter each time, i'm guessing that's a good thing?
Today, I scrubbed all around the pool, an had a filter sock on the basket... got a LOT of gunk/debris out. to the point where it suffocated the water flow into the pump. was afraid to leave the sock on overnight in case it happens again. will see if i have some time tomorrow to repeat the process.
since I added CYA 3 days ago, should i NOT do the filter sock thing? is it akin to cleaning the filter?
