I have been fighting Mustard algae for years. The issue has been a much too high level of CYA, leading to insufficient sanitizing action, even with high free chlorine levels.

This year, I drained the pool and used up my puck collection to get the pool to 30 CYA. I rebalanced everything, still getting the hardness level up. But TA 60, Borates 30, pH 7.6-7.8. And my FC level, I raise to 6 ppm each night. It drops to about 3.0-3.5 by the evening. And, as usual, I brush at least weekly.

No mustard algae in the past month!

Get your numbers right and keep them in the range. Add Chlorine at night so that it is high for hours.

Another vote for the science of pool care.

When you add the chlorine does not matter as long as your FC is not dropping below the minimum. Most of the chlorine is reserve chlorine with a little being active chlorine providing the sanitation.
