Hi! I’m new to TFP and looking for some help on my green/yellow pool. I refuse to use algaecide as recommended by my pool store and I’m preparing to do my first SLAM. I just ordered the FAC/DPD kit to add to my HTH 6 way kit. Ive been visiting the pool store for test and my results are below. I need to get my PH under control before SLAM. I added PH Down and the day after added stabilizer. In the last 4 days it went from 7.8 to 8.2. Ang help is appreciated.

FC .08
TC .08
PH 8.5, yesterday 8.2, 2 days ago 8.0 (after adding pH down) previous 8.3

Welcome, dont use pH down to lower the pH as it adds sulphates to the pool. Its best to use muratic acid.

You can add 5ppm liqiid chlorine eqch day until your test kit arrives to keep things from getting worse. The pool store test results arent helpful for this.

Thank you! Very helpful just don’t know what I will do with all the pH down I have. When should I put in the muratic acid?

So no muratic acid to bring ph down?
It looks like you only ordered the FAS-DPD for accurate FC testing correct? That means you are either using the HTH drop test kit or pool store for your pH test? That's fine. Just bring the pH down to the lower 7 range. Anywhere from 7.2-7.5 will work so that once you receive the FAS-DPD you can start the SLAM Process.

With your Intex vinyl pool and no SWCG, you can use your pH Down. I suspect you also drain the pool quite a bit at winter so that will reduce the sulfate buildup.

I’m curious do I so that a day before I start SLAM so the pH does have a chance to go back up? How long in between pH chem and SLAM?

Since your pH appears to be a bit high, I would add the first dose of acid (best to go in careful stages) and let it mix for an hour or so then re-test. If you need to lower a bit more, do that then you can go right into the SLAM.

Okay thank you! I can still return the pH down so not too bad.
Marty’s right. The powdered pH down stuff is only a problem with heaters, concrete/stone decking, and water that doesnt get replaced a lot. With an intex pool you dont really have those concerns. So keep it or use it up, knowing that the muriatic acid is a better future choice and also cheaper.

Okay this was very helpful, thank you

Slam can take a few days, up to a couple/few weeks. Depends on the starting point.

You can make progress, if you check and replace FC every 2 hours, even into the night, if you have to work. Better that than wait. Then you can do every 2 hours on the weekends to get ahead.

I work full time
Many do. You do the best you can, when you can.

Go right until bedtime once you're home.

With a weekend coming up it's a great time to start. Plan on being around the first day so you can dose every 2 hours. Usually if you hit it hard to start, the chlorine is holding 4+ hours on day 2, which opens up considerably more free time during the day. It's pretty much dosing at the 3 meals and bedtime, and you're free in between on Sunday. Then by day 3 the chlorine is holding 8+ hours and you have plenty of time to go back to work.

UPDATE: my PH just won’t go down. I added recommended amount of acid this morning left for the day came back to test and still no change, I maybe waited to long in between to test?

Yes this makes sense. My issue right now if I can’t get my ph down. Put recommend amount this morning left for the day came back tested and still the same. Did I wait too long in between to test? I was gone about 12 hrs.

Test, add enough muriatic acid to lower pH by .4, pump running, test 30 minutes later, lower again by .4, 30 minutes, test, etc...until you get to 7.2-7.5...then start the slam
