This was our first pool year. Our youngest boy started the season needing a float vest, but now asks to wear weight belts to practice freediving like his dad and brothers.
It is great to get kids comfortable in the water young. I can’t understand people who never learned to swim and are uncomfortable in water. To me it is like not learning to walk.
He turned 4 in May. When I was a kid, there was a public pool we used to spend almost every day of the summer at.
One of the reasons we built this pool is that given my work, proximity to a public pool and our largish family, the kids would never be able to experience what I did as a kid apart from having our own.
I used to have so much fun just being underwater as a kid. It was just as good as being able to fly. I also got the kids weight belts for buoyancy, which may be controversial for kids that young- but they love them and are only allowed to use them when i'm right next to them.
We aren't there yet for him, but our pool isn't that deep so there isn't much concern. We were supposed to go freediving / snorkeling this week in Florida, but our trip was canceled because of the storm. I was going to teach the kids those things in deeper waters. I remember when I was a kid, you start to feel the pain in your ears and usually you know not to go further down until you learn to equalize.... but yeah, the weight belt will just pull you right down if you aren't careful!
And agree with you on one of the reasons why we are building our pool as well. I grew up swimming in a crick (errr creek. But I'm a crick girl) I spent every summer day there.
What type of camera/case do you use for underwater vids? Something else I need to buy!
