Mesh Cover Fail

We had lots of wind this winter which did a number on my mesh pool cover. Long story short, most of the dirt and leaves the cover should have caught is sitting at the bottom of the pool. What is the best way to get it all out? Just hook up the vac to the pump and keep cleaning the cartridge filter over and over?

With no way to vacuum to waste, I would first start by physically trying to remove as much solid debris as possible with a netting. Scoop, dump, and repeat. Ha. Once you've exhausted that avenue, you'll probably end-up vacuuming and cleaning the filter quite a bit.
