Massive staining of rapid onset.

I do my best with our pool, but springtime weather here in NorCal has given me algae problems when I’ve gotten behind. I had our pool dialed in in late April but high winds in May overwhelmed my vacuum and I got busy at work and well… I blew it. The pool had a massive algae bloom. This happens to me almost every year but this year there’s a huge difference. There are huge areas where the algae doesn’t brush off. Even a stiff wire brush does nothing. This has never happened before and so I didn’t know it was a possible outcome or I’d have been far more diligent.

I know you guys want my numbers and I’ll get them to you when I get home from work tonight. But Very basically is there any way out of this kind of staining that doesn’t involve a full resurfacing? Is there any way out of this that doesn’t involve draining the pool?

Welcome to TFP.

One step at a time....

First SLAM Process and clear the algae problem.

Then see what stains are left and ...

If they are all organic stains from the algae then running your pool with a higher then normal FC level may fade them over time.

How old is your pool and plaster?

Tell us what you do to sanitize normally? What products do you (or have you) used in the water this year??

In 10+ years I've never had algae. Something is wrong in your pool care methods and water??

Try to be the optimist (and look at the info you provided). I’m no expert in solving your problem but I am pretty good at analysis so here we go — algae bloom (organic) followed by staining. Chlorine bleaches and oxidizes organic staining. Just being an optimist, I don’t see a resurfacing in your immediate future 😀. One step at a time . . . .
