I’m m going to jump into this topic with a question closely related.
My pH goes up by 0.2-0.3 every day Ive been adding MA about every 3 days. I’ve seen the phrase “chasing pH” and that’s what I feel I’m doing. I drop it to 7.3 and two-three days later it’s 8.0. I am a second year pool owner, old pool, first year not using HDX test kit, and don’t know how or if this daily rise is common.
TF Pro test set tests this morning.
FC = 7.0
PH = 7.8 (I can go one more day in the safe zone)
CC = 0.5
TA = 60
CH = 450 (Super hard fill water here)
CYA = 80
I would like to imagine a future where I’m not adding 64 ounces of MA every three days. What can I do?

Your fill water TA is 130 ppm. You are adding significant fill water right now. So your TA is rising, and lowering it takes MA.

If your TA of the pool water is 60, I would only be lowering the pH to 7.6 when you add acid. It should take 3-4 days before it is above 8. You are trying to match the elimination of TA from the acid with the addition of the TA from the fill water.

So adding MA every 3-4 days is normal for some pools? If so, I can quit worrying about it and just keep it between 7.6 and 8.0 by adding less MA. I think that will require adding MA every other day though. Also, having to add MA so often has dropped TA from 130 to 60 in a month, so I’m guessing that raising TA is in my near future once it drops to 40 or so. Arm and Hammer…

With our fill water, adding MA every few days is the best way to manage the pH and TA.

Never, never add baking soda. NO need. Once your pH reaches where you are, the pH cannot go above 8.3. At 40 ppm TA, it cannot go above 8. But it can also crash low, so just reduce MA adds now.

I keep my pool water TA about 80 ppm.
