Looking for advice about filtration with a glass filter

We are in the middle of the slam. Opened the pool 10 days ago. It has been cold and rainy most of the time, the water temperature has been around 50F till two days ago.

Previous years, we would always add some DE to the filter otherwise the filtration would take forever. Unfortunately, we finished our 25lb bag last year. Pool grade DE is very hard to come by in the Quebec Province. All pool filters are either cartridge or glass.

I was very happy when I found some DE and it was added to the skimmer like every other year. BUT I think it was animal/food grade DE! See picture. Now the pool is milky.

  • Did I by the correct type of DE? If not, were can I get some in Quebec, or close to Ottawa, Ontario?
  • Is there anything else I can use to help the filter (glass alone does not seem to do the job)?
  • Should I consider changing the glass for sand? If so what type of sand?

Read Sand Filter Use and Care - Further Reading

It says…

Pool grade DE MUST be used, food, pet or garden grade will not work. The use of the wrong type of DE will cause it to go directly through the filter and cloud up your pool worse.

And answers your questions about sand, which we recommend over alternative media.

How do I know if it is the appropriate type of DE, if it is not specifically marked as "pool DE"?

Would this qualify as "pool DE": powder contains 79.5% of silicon dioxide?
From Copilot:

Pool-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a specific type of DE that has been heat-treated and activated for use in swimming pool filters. This process, known as calcination, hardens the diatom exoskeletons, making them more effective at filtering out contaminants. The high temperatures also turn the silicon dioxide within the DE into crystalline silica, which enhances its ability to trap dirt, algae, and bacteria.

Unlike food-grade DE, which is composed mainly of amorphous silica and is safe for use in homes and gardens, pool-grade DE should only be used for filtration due to its high crystalline silica content. It is applied to DE pool filters, where it forms a fine coating that captures microscopic pollutants, ensuring clear and clean pool water

Also consider filter fiber - it is cellulose fiber.
May be more reasonable and comes in smaller amounts.
Jacks filter fiber stuff and fiber clear are two brands and leslies also sells their own brand.
