Liquid Chlorine in Tucson, AZ

Hey everyone,
So I just called the pool store to inquire about the price of liquid chlorine, and the owner said that she didn't recommend liquid chlorine in southern AZ, because people find it hard to control their FC levels here due to the heat and rate of evaporation. She was really pushing me towards trichlor pucks (which most people do seem to use out here). Is there any real science to her claim, or was this just the pool store being the pool store and trying to sell expensive chemicals? I'd really like to hear from anyone living in southern AZ who uses bleach.

Trichlor can be useful if you need cyanuric acid. If your CYA is good, you're better off with liquid chlorine.

Maintaining good fc is fairly easy to do if you follow TFP guidelines.
 
The PS employee is correct since they deal with people that think maintaining their pool water chemistry is at most a weekly chore. That is NOT true and leads to the use of pucks as it seems they work great, until they don't.

The use of Liquid Chlorine works, but it must be added DAILY. That is why many of us go to SWCG's or Stenner pump systems.

To use manually added LC it will be best to keep your CYA on the high side of recommended due to our strong sun and heat here in the summer. That will keep your FC loss down to 3-4 ppm each day, excluding high organic load days.

Joyful and mknass are spot on - Liquid Chlorine/Bleach is fine here. I maintain CYA at around 60 to combat our strong sun though.

You'll do fine with liquid as long as you're testing daily. Save the trichlor for vacations. :)
 
eKonomy Pools sells liquid chlorine in 4 x 1 gallon refillable containers. With a $6 deposit for the safety carrier (the $6 is refundable) and a cost of ~ $4 per gallon (price varies with season), it’s the cheapest 10% LC you’ll find. And, best of all, no empties to clog up your recycle bin. They do the same with muriatic acid.
