Welcome to TFP! You can leave them in, but steps are often times a haven to algae due to poor circulation. They can be a royal pain to remove, but physically it won't hurt anything for them to stay in. It's all about algae. With temps dropping in your area, if the water is 100% algae free now, hopefully you won't have any organic developments. If you do, you can address them next spring.
