Learning about my new to me pool and equipment

Well done signature!

SO with no tablets or swg then your pool is heading in the right direction and almost purrfect! well done!

The waterfall is the rocks between the spa and pool? Have not seen that done before.

Might want to ask your insurance company how they feel about the wonderfully fun board. Sure would hate for you to lose your coverage if they happen to find out about it on their own.
YAY!! So glad to hear it’s going in the right direction! We moved in on October 7 and haven’t been able to jump in yet!

The hardware on the diving board that it’s fastened to the cement with is so rusty and scary looking I will probably remove it. Also the diving board looks like not might split in half if jumped on!

Yeah the waterfall, it runs down into the pool. I just can’t get the pump to prime but that’s probably another forum thread!

The house is Mid-Century Modern and was designed and built in 1977 (as was the pool) so stuff is old like the waterfall placement and the wall mounted pool/spa controls! I found a manual online for it, programmed it and it still works! 😄😉

I am of a mind to put all of your threads into one thread. You already have some of the best help available on TFP on them. It will keep all of this neat story together so you can go back and re-read your whole story with one click. If there is a reason you don't want that to happen let me know.
I was thinking this too - I saw the initial post so I was waiting for this one but having the background in one place is super helpful 😊

Thank you, I think that’s a neat idea!

I hope I can still post questions and people will answer on the thread?

And thank you and everyone for the support, encouragement and great help so far on my journey with new pool ownership!

It is still not clear to me to know how much chlorine to add to the pool! I know (ppm) but have no idea how to calculate this into gallons needed to add?

There are the different colored segments on the sample yellow square tube that have a number but I'm not sure how to decipher this.

Thank you!

Use
PoolMath it is a calculator

That is the oto test. Don’t use it. Use the fas/dpd test

Thank you!
😊

After entering your test results,
Click the card for the parameter you need to adjust from the overview page

All your most recent results will be in there (fc, cya )
You want your target to be 8ppm or a scootch higher.
Then scroll down and you’ll see where you select bleach & its strength & the calculator will tell you how much to use to reach your target 🎯

Okay I remember now, thank you!!

Just performed and uploaded this morning’s test.

I don’t know if topping off the pool with city water had anything to do with the changes but I need to buy something to decrease the pH with according to the results.

Also my chlorine still seems to be a little high after adding the recommended 2 gallons a couple days ago.

I don’t know what CSI means, but I got a “congratulations” on that score!

I still can’t get over how freaking crystal clear the water is with the new cartridge filter instead of the sand filter!

Your pool being crystal clear has more to do with proper chemistry than having a new filter.

Your pH is in range. But you will need muriatic acid to lower the pH.
With a TA of 100, chances are that the pH will continue to rise. Not a big deal, add the muriatic acid and that will lower the pH - and will lower the TA a little over time.
This time of year, a TA of 70-90 should work well. In summer, a TA of 60-70 might be better. The TA will s-l-o-w-l-y come down with each acid addition. You may also notice a slowing of the pH rise.

I can't remember, did you ever post the pH, TA and CH of your fill water?

There are a lot of different choices of muriatic acid on the Pool Math!

Is there a preferred one the group uses/likes?

The one that's available at a reasonable price.

Most of us only have full and half strength available. 31.45% / 14.5%. Ace hardware had full strength for $9.99 this season by me but it was $25.99 at Sherman Wiliams. The home stores only had half strength (green / eco / low fumes) for $11 or $13. Pool stores may have a good price on full strength. Google it up all over by you.

Same! $9.99 here at ACE, 31.45%. I will go buy some! 👍🏼

Your cc’s are decreasing- I suspect due to simply now having adequate fc. This is good news 👍🏻
Aim to keep fc at high target or a scootch above as you get your “pool legs” so you don’t risk broaching minimum.
I see you have now logged cya as 40.
If the black dot disappeared anywhere between 40 & 50 you count cya as 50 for chlorination purposes.
Always round up if between two values so you know you’re covered.
Also, cya doesn’t change a ton in a short time unless you exchange water.
Be sure you’re doing the test in bright light (outdoors on a sunny day is best)
& that the sample is at least room temperature.

Thanks for the reply!

The CYA was closer to 40 than 50 but I do remember now to go for 50 if this is the case!

I have been gathering the samples with a water bottle pre-rinsed with pool water and sitting down at the kitchen table with my test kit to perform and log my tests. It may have not exactly been room temp but I was definitely warmer than the 42° it was in the pool!

I will read the article you linked!

It’s very easy to just put it in the bottle - put the cap on & stick it in your pocket for a bit to warm it up. Also a good trick for ear/eye drops 😊
