Learning about my new to me pool and equipment

Your overnight FC loss needs to be addressed. The other parameters don't change much if you walk away from them for a couple of weeks.

Skimp on the FC, like you did, and it's a one way ticket to the SLAM Process .

Have a read and follow it to a T. It's a process not a one and done .
Yes I want to address the FC loss please!

Was it a proper OCLT in the dark on both ends ? Even if you slept in for the morning test, I don't see anyone losing 3ppm a day right now, muchless with it dark for most of the time, so you need to SLAM Process.

I did the test at 11 last night and then at 7:30 as the sun was just coming up behind the mountains!

Ok, while not 'proper', there's just no way you lost 3ppm from UV in that short time.

The battle should be considerably easier with cool water, so you have that going for you, which is nice.

Yeah, maybe it was still more concentrated last night the 1/2 hour after I poured the 2 gallons of chlorine in?

Then when checked it this morning it had mixed better? I took the sample before the sun was on the pool and brought it inside.

I’m really overwhelmed and frustrated and confused about what results I want, but the pool is crystal clear but apparently that’s not all that matters!!

It's alot to process at first with information overload. Take a breath and re-read any given sentence, and it's as clear as day. :)

Correct. Algae is microscopic and by the time you can see it, you're WAY behind the 8 ball. Your testing says you lost 3 FC with no UV on the pool. That means there is organics (algae) consuming the chlorine. The TFP method will always give you plenty of warning, even if you don't see the issue yet.

Chlorine is always job numero uno. If you stay properly chlorinated, we have time to address anything else as they are all long term concerns.

OKAY SO…

I don’t know what it means but I said what the heck and just test it right now at 5:30 and my readings (without running the pump) are:

FC 8
CC 1

Does this help decide anything? It’s pretty much the exact numbers as my test this morning at 7:30 which was:

FC 8
CC 2.0

Maybe the chlorine is okay and I just test too early after adding the 2 gallons last night?

Okay ran pump for 45 minutes, test again.

FC 8
CC 1

Pretty consistent with this mornings and a little while ago’s readings.

If it’s the same now as it was at this mornings 7:30 test does this rule out any chlorine loss? It’s been 12 hours and daylight.

That looks good. Lets get some homework done for you. Please fill in your signature as seen here: Create Your Signature - Further Reading That will help us see your pool details at a glance.

Do you have a SWG or any kind of tablets/pucks on your equipment? Just want to make sure there is no other way of adding chlorine to your pool.

You know…I had my signature filled out and it hen I noticed people had descriptions of their pool next to their avatar so I filled that part in and deleted my signature! 😄

I will get my homework finished today but might need help identifying some of the equipment!

There aren’t any tablets/pucks in the pool! No SWG!

Thank you!

Ok, GREAT. So the test with overnight loss was probably a fluke or user error. (It happens, you're new :)). Then you passed an overnight test.

Get a tie breaking OCLT and make sure to have it well and mixed on both ends. 20 mins should be enough. Protip: leave the pump running overnight (low RPM is fine if applicable) and you won't have to wake up earlier to mix.

The fc loss is certainly looking better but the elevated cc’s is still a little concerning.
Do you have a cover (solar or otherwise) on the pool?
P.s. you’re doing a great job of testing & logging!

I have a cover but it is not on. There are solar heating panels but they are bypassed right now. The guy that installed the new filter recommended I bypass them this time of year.

And thank you! I’m enjoying the testing.

We haven’t even turned on the heater to try out the spa yet! I turned on the heater real quick, just to make sure it came on and it does. The whole house is electric but there is a BIG propane tank on the property solely for pool/spa heating.

Okay, homework done, I've filled in my signature! Also, I've included photos of my vintage controls for you all to admire (LOL) and photos of the pool and spa! There is a very nice view of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range from the pool!

This "TIME MASTER" is mounted on the wall in our bedroom!!! I'd like to find a replacement knob for the temp control.

I would like to find another label plate, paint the box and put the new plate on!

Well done signature!

SO with no tablets or swg then your pool is heading in the right direction and almost purrfect! well done!

The waterfall is the rocks between the spa and pool? Have not seen that done before.

Might want to ask your insurance company how they feel about the wonderfully fun board. Sure would hate for you to lose your coverage if they happen to find out about it on their own.
