Leak in a bad place I think

I finally am able to do this project today and I have all the parts discussed. I am going to begin with the suction side. Will place a union sweep directly on intake and possibly need to pull pump a few inches foward. Then I will put 90 degree union sweep on discharge and angle it to exisiting pipe and replace the hard 90 with a sweep. Not much I can do about the next question but I will ask. Can I create cavitation by removing a few inches of straight pipe that went to the suction side?
 
Done. Project went ok but two things I wish did not happen. 1) kicked over bottle of primer on everything. 2) The sweep that I put on the suction side moved. You can see the initial primer ring and how it pulled away. I should have cut the pipe to the valves another half inch for it to fit better. Pictures included

update: The top union is slowly leaking at 9 oclock. very slow. I was working with a buddy and I asked him to hand tighten only but he seemed to get agressive with the wrench. Now I can't undo at moment because of hand issue. Stay tuned. Hopefully just poorly placed teflon. Pictures to follow

Teflon is all but useless on this type of threads. Doesn't that have an oring?

I prefer to use Teflon as it provides an extra seal.

The correct amount of Teflon depends on the looseness of the fit.

It is tricky to use Teflon, silicone and an O-ring, but it can be done.
 
For the O-ring to seal, the pump port has to have a clean and smooth sealing surface.

It "should" work with just the O-ring, but my preference is to have as much certainty as possible.

I do not know the anatomical words of the union but I used teflon tape alone in the part that screws into the pump as well as the part that attaches to it. I forgot about the lubricant for O-rings. These unions are like brand new ie never used before.

In regards to silicone cement, we are talking about using it for the pump/union threads only, right?
Should I not have used teflon anywhere....seems as this might be controversial.

addendum: I was able to loosen top nut half turn so

Should I try the whole process without the tape? If the tape did not hit the O-ring could it be responsible for leak?

Nah not really controversial. When there is an oring, that is all that is needed to seal the joint. That said, some people take extra measures. I would first try just the oring, lubed, and not too tight. The oring should seal completely with proper compression. If too tight, it will leak. It is less likely to leak if it is too loose.

Ok I think I will undo everything and remove teflon and add lubricant and see what happens. Thanks
