Just got test kit...feeling overwhelmed

Okay when I got home I put in close to the amount of bleach and acid that pool math called for (Couldn't get exact because it was measuring in cups and ounces and only measuring thing I had was cups) and PH is at 7.4 (much better than 8.0) but chlorine is still low. Using a 10ml sample the FC is at 1.5 and the CC is at 1....so I'm assuming I need to put ALOT more bleach in. Right? Do I also need to put more acid in to bring the PH down a little more?

I believe the germicidal bleach is ok to use. It's 8.25% vs 6% in Clorox original.
I'd call 7.4 close enough.

Yes, yes, yes, get a lot more bleach in there! How many gallons of water does the pool hold?

I'm not 100% sure....it's my b/f's pool and he's had it for a couple years so he's not sure but he thought it was a 16X42 but I think it might be a 15X42 so that's what I've been going by. Figured it was better to shoot lower that way I wouldn't be putting too much stuff in it. So if I go by it being a 15X42 then PoolMath says it holds 4600 gallons of water :)

Here's the formula for determining the best value when buying liquid chlorine. Price / (ounces x percentage).

A couple examples using prices from Walmart.com.

Pool Essentials - $3.64 for 128 oz of 10%
128 x .1= 12.8
3.64 / 12.8 = .28 or 28 cents per effective oz.

Clorox Germicidal - $6.06 for 121 oz of 8.25%
121 x .0825 = 9.98
6.06 / 9.98 = .61 or 61 cents per effective oz. (over 2 times as expensive as the Pool Essentials)

*****Yeah next time I get bleach I am going to go with the other kind. I just went to Home Depot to get the Muriatic Acid and wanted to pick up the bleach at the same time and that was the only kind they had available so I went with that at the time.

Also should I have checked my TA again since I lowered my PH or does TA really matter right now?**********

For SLAM, at the start, I would test every 2 hours or so. Take the FC back to 24 after you test.

Just to interject from earlier. If you have a pool store close you might be able to pick up 12.5% chlorine (just don't go to a Leslie's as they don't carry it) I get HASA chlorine myself. I get mine from my local pool store, it is a little more expensive but you use less of it so it sort of evens out.

1 - Test
2 - Add what Poolmath says to get you to FC of 24.
3 - Wait one hour
4 - Repeat

I'd test every hour if FC is below 20. Once it starts to hold at 20 or more check every 2 hours. You'll just have to do it that often the first day. After that 3 or 4 times a day. We'll advise as we see your results. When you starting?

Mike.......thanks and not really sure when I'm gonna be able to start.......would like to have all day to do it but I work so might wait til Saturday......I'm gone working most days from around 6a to at least 6p so I don't think that would get me anywhere to try to start it before work.....if you know what I mean. I did add a little bleach in this morning before I cam to work since it was on 1.5 last night........after adding what was recommended. Should have checked it before that but didn't think about it at the time.....all this is a little confusing for me......sorry

Question on bleach........if a jug of bleach doesn't show the % on it should you use it? I was looking on some online at Walmart yesterday and I couldn't see anywhere where it listed what the percentage was.....of course with my eye sight I just might have not seen it but thought I would ask anyway.....do they all list a percentage and if they don't should you avoid that kind?

Thanks.....
