I'm excited to day that we just got our hayward aquarite 40k installed. I was hoping to get some step by step instructions from this community before I turn it on. Here are my current readings, my understanding is that I'll need to get my CYA up to the 50 range as it will produce enough to maintain 8ppm FC - Is that correct? I'm also seeing different calculations for how much salt I should add, and how long after adding I should turn the cell on. Any advice appareciated! Ideally im looking for the ideal order of operations to follow before and after I turn the cell on

Salt - 800ppm

FC - 5ppm

PH 7.8

CYA - 20

How are you testing salt? Get a taylor 1766 is don’t already have one and add salt little at a time to make sure you do t get too high.
Usually 24 hours is enough to mix it good and retest.
You will love it once up and running, takes a few weeks to get it stable at the desired FC ( aim higher rather then lower ) but then pool life becomes a lot easier :)

Step 2 (after or during adjusting salt) is to
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test before raising the CYA. If something was brewing, your SLAM target goes up proportionately with the CYA and would suck to find out in a couple of weeks.

What has your daily loss been recently ?
How long do you currently run the pump ?

This is the kind of detail I'm looking for. I recently slammed and passed OCLT last week.

What order of operations should I follow? Does it matter it I raise CYA vs salt first? Or should I do the following:

1. Start adding salt (pool math says 10 bags) until I'm testing at 3200ppm
2. At the same time starting adding CYA until I reach 50
3. Retest everything to make sure chem is balanced
4. Turn on SWG

To your final question daily loss has been about 5-6ppm (we live in Charleston SC, It gets really hot in summer). I'm currently running the pump from 6am to midnight at 2k rpm

Awesome. But 5 to 6 loss is abnormally high for this time of year so pass another OCLT before raising the CYA. It has fooled many before with clear water and you'd rather know for sure.

The salt and CYA can then be raised simultaneously (once the salt kit comes). Creep up to both as they only come out by draining. Get your baselines and add 75% to target. Adjust further per the results once it's all well mixed.

The 40k cell will produce 1 FC every 2.27 hours, (use 3 hours for easy maths) for you so if you're losing 5 per day, it needs to run 15 hours at 100% (or any equivalent maths like 24 hours at 65%). Once set and producing, monitor and adjust as necessary.

I've seen a few different recommendations for CYA level. What should I be shooting for?

Do the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test first to rule out any issues or a need to SLAM Process

Once all that is worked out, a CYA or 50 will serve you well thru winter.
Next spring, up the CYA to 70.
Use the FC/CYA Levels to determine the minimum and target range FC levels - and always shoot for the high end of the FC target range.

Pass an OCLT and I'll tell you. 😛

Nah I'm just foolin. You'll only (possibly) hurt yourself if you skip the confirmation. 70 is probably fine for SC and this time of year a 50 may even be ok.
