Just getting started

Thank you for the quick response. If I understand you correctly that would mean to add 10 jugs to reach the SLAM level of 28 per the chart. Is that correct?
Yep. I had to double check that -- your pool is HUGE. Have you investigated sources of stronger chlorine? In your case, a 25% reduction in volume could mean a couple less trips from the car to the yard.

14 jugs, 10 gallons

Just got started with this site last week. We are getting bleach at Big Lots for 1.49 per 96 oz jug. I will check on that today. Thank you again for your help. I truly believe this approach will solve the problems we have been having every year!!

What is the strength of the bleach you are using? I thought I read somewhere the Big Lots brand was 3%. I would make sure you are using a stronger bleach.

After read though the posts in your thread again, I would suspect the bleach you are using is very weak, which is causing it to drop much quicker than it should.

For your next test, you need to test 1 hour after adding to see it's effects. That will give you a better idea of the strength of bleach you are using.

I checked and agree. Draining 1/2 the pool did drop the CYA significantly but the bleach is too weak. We are getting the stronger bleach today and will SLAM tonight. Just tested and the FC was 8.6, CYA - 60. Thanks for your interest and the information.

Excellent.

You may not even need to SLAM. What looked like consumption may have been just weaker bleach than expected. It won't hurt to bring it up to SLAM level and go from there.

Nice Job!

Okay, Tested at 6:15 this morning.

FC - 6.8 - 7.0 7.0(the last one was the diluted test)
CC - 0
PH - 7.6
TA - 90
CYA - 70

Looks like the weak bleach was the issue but will keep checking the numbers and see what it takes to keep the FC in range. Sound reasonable??

And I meant to add that the FC last night at 8:30 was 7.0 and we did not add any bleach.

For CYA =70, your target FC is 8, min is 5. I would be sure to try to keep the FC as close to 8 as possible. With this high of a CYA, an algae outburst will be tough to fight as shock level is 28. You'd need 7 gallons of 12% to get from 7 to 28 with your size pool.

Also, I'd use a 10ml sample for the FC test instead of 25ml, you'll use much less reagent and you don't need that level of accuracy.

Good morning. Stocked up on 121 oz jugs of 8.25 bleach yesterday and began the SLAM process. PH was 7.6 at the start and brought the FC up to 28 around 3:00 pm. CC was .5. Brushed the entire pool. Tested around midnight, FC was 26, added 2 jugs per PoolMath, went to bed. Checked FC this morning at 6:20 and was 24. CC was .5 Added 3 jugs per PoolMath and will monitor throughout the day and maintain shock level until I can pass the overnight test. The water is clear. Will clean the cartridges today. Thanks to all for your support and suggestions. Will keep posting results. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The water is beautiful, CC is zero. I added no chlorine at 9am, 2 jugs at noon and no chlorine at 2 pm. Pool was vacuumed, filters cleaned, water added at noon. FC is now 29, CC is 0. And I did post a picture of the pool on page one if you can see it(if not let me know). Lots of work and attention to get it this far and everyone who posted has been very positive and helpful. I will do the overnight test and post in the morning. Very exciting!!

Yep, got the pic! Okay, we will wait with you for the OCLT :D

Good morning. Been sampling since 6:15. And getting different results each time so a little confused.

First test - FC - 24 CC - 0
Second test - FC - 25 CC - .5
Third test - FC - 27 CC - 0

Must be doing something wrong but not sure what. The sample was taken at 6:15 for all 3 tests. Sunrise is 6:30.

Should have added that my last sample last night was FC at 25 and CC at zero. Sorry

Regardless of what happened w/the tests, I'd throw out the last one and the first two say you passed the OCLT.

If it was my pool, I'd take it back to SLAM level tonight and do one more OCLT. Just to make double sure, especially since the pool is huge!

What is the CYA level?

Take some credit too. You did the work. I agree with Butterfly above, one more night to be sure but I think you are really done and now just need to maintain. With a pool that big you don't want to mess it up in case there is a small chance you have something growing in there.

Looks like the weak bleach was the issue.

Enjoy your pool.
