Just Bought A House With A Pool...Where to Begin?

Pool Math: The number on the left is the current amount of CYA (0) and the number on the right is the target, either 30 or 40. Nothing wrong with using 30 or 40. I prefer to shoot for 30 as you can always add more later.

Then put your mouse over the box that tells you how much stabilizer to add. The upper white bar next to your pool size will give the conversion from ounces to pounds. This will tell you how much to buy.

It is frustrating and a huge learning curve, but you will be your own expert soon.

Trichlor is a solid form of chlorine and you don't want to use it right now. You want to use plain bleach. Make sure you select the jug size, then mouse over the box that current reads 133 oz. The upper white bar will tell you how much of regular bleach to add to get to a FC of 10.

You also need to repeat the process except for your CYA.

Also, you need to put in your pool size.

That first line that says "Add 133 oz of ..." is the liquid chlorine amount. Change the 8.25% to whatever the chlorine is you have (8.25, 10 or 12.5%) the the "96oz" drop down to the size of the bottle of chlorine (usually 121oz or 128oz). Then when you hover your mouse over the "133oz" box, the white box above will tell you the conversion into gallons/cups/pints etc.

I just looked back and still missed your numbers. I saw some posted by someone else but thought that was an example since it wasn't from the OP.

Ok, so once I go to the store to get a tubesock, I'll add 196oz of bleach, and set up the sock with 4lbs of stabilizer. Then I'll turn on the pump. Anything else? How will I know when I need to backwash?

Also, should I brush?

Nope.. CYA and FC are priority
Backwash will be 10% above normal operating pressure.. Id do a 1 min backwash now just in case the filter is dirty and youll be able to see what the normal pressure is..
Brush as much as you can.. Itll dislodge any algae suck to the liner

Cool. That's what I'll do then in an hour or so. Hopefully the green will start to fade?

IT may start to but dont get your hopes up just yet.. Takes time to get rid of algae.. It didnt get green overnight so it wont get clear over night. Once you officially start your slam, thats when youll start to see results

When the CYA is fully dissolved, you can start your slam which i why I said it might not happen till the weekend...Tomorrow at the earliest if you have the time to monitor
