We'll stick with you...
You have already started and are doing great..
Everyone that has accepted this method has started exactly where you are right now...
Nervous, unsure, overwhelmed... Don't worry.. Its gonna work out.

Just need your test results when you get them and we can go from there... There are a lot of people watching this thread and will chime in..

Don't worry, this is a safe place! We want to help you get the sparkling oasis so you and your family and friends can enjoy it!

On a side note, I hope you enjoy entertaining guests. Because when you have a TFP pool in your back yard, everyone shows up to your parties in the summer!!

It depends on your results....Realistically, your slam may not start until the weekend... Prep work and patience (hard for me to say that) is required...

Do a full battery of tests when you get there so we know where to start..

This is my guess and plan of action if I was in your shoes (which I have been)
FC- 0-2
CC- 1-2
PH- 7.4
TA - unknown
CH - unknown
CYA- 0

Based on that guess of your levels, here is what my course of action would be for today...(pump running)
Add enuf bleach to get back to the 9 range.. approx. 1.5 gal 8.25%
Add 4 lbs of stabilizer... In a tube sock/pantyhose hanging in front of your return jet (4lbs will add approx. 33 CYA for 14700 gallons)
Squeeze sock every 15-30 min to help disperse CYA faster (may take about 2 hours to get it all out)
Scrub walls and floor with brush and net out any larger debris you can while CYA is dissolving. Backwash when necessary

Test PH - Record results - Add MA if necessary to bring it down to 7.2ish
Test FC - Record results - Add bleach to get it back up to 9 (wait 30 min before adding bleach if you had to add MA)

Chances are (and most likely) your CYA is zero. We need to get some of that into the water to protect the FC from the sun (CYA is sunscreen for Chlorine). CYA could take up to 48 hours to fully register but you can target 40 CYA for your Slam levels...

He has the kit and he really needs to test CYA. He has no idea what the the prior owners did to maintain the pool. He has just as much of a chance of having really high CYA and needing to drain.

I really don't get this. Pool ABCs says to shock at 20 (guess there is no 0 mark) I need to get FC up to 10, but according to the calculator, with a goal of 9/10 I need to add only 22 ounces of bleach. That isn't even a full bottle and this is saying that will shock the pool?

What size is your pool? That will vary the amount needed to get to shock level.

I just looked back and found 14,700 gallons in a previous post. So to go from 1ppm FC to 10ppm you need 196oz of 8.25% bleach. Or just over 1.5 gallons.

Also, almost 5lbs of stabilizer to get from 0 to 40ppm. But I would start with just 2-3lbs in a sock in front of a return jet. Then test again in a few days.

Well, I guess that answers it, you don't have any CYA. You definitely need to add some otherwise the sun will burn the FC before it gets a chance to work on clearing up the water.

There are two types of CYA, liquid is the most expensive and granules are the cheapest. It is sold under the key words as "conditioner" and "stabilizer" Can be found at some Wal-Marts, big box home improvement stores and if all else fails, a pool store.

Use pool math to determine how much to add and set a target for 30. Post what pool math tells you and we'll verify. Add a little less than what pool math says because it is easy to add, but you have to drain if you add too much. For the granules, put it in a sock and hang it in front of a return, squeeze the sock a few times a day.

Once you add the CYA, go ahead and set a target FC to 12 based on the FC/CYA chart found here: Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart

The more frequently you test and keep FC at 12, the faster it will do. Here are the full details on SLAMing: Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain

I don't know how to use the calculator. I tried and it gives me goofy results. The problem is everyone keeps telling me one number for a target but the calculator is asking for two.

You can do both but test the water first, post some numbers and we'll verify. So I guess, do the bleach first. Put 1.5 gallons in and let the pump run 24/7.

I already did! Didn't I?
