Jandy Salt Cell corrosion on plug

Hi - I'm new to this site. We have the Jandy AquaPure 1400 which was installed in 2007. We have all Jandy equipment - 3 pumps (1 was upgraded to the variable in 2015 and Jandy told the contractor to add a chip to the panel to make it communicate with the rest of the system), a hand held PDA, heater, and the filtration tank. The first salt cell lasted 5 year until 2013. In 2015 when we upgraded the pump to the variable, the 2 year old salt cell was starting to have issues. I might add that during this install process when we upgraded to the variable pump, Jandy never told our contractor that the 2007 panel will have issues with the new salt cells (more on this below) he was just told to add a chip. We got 1 more year with the cell and in 2016 we installed a new cell. Now in 2018 the center prong on the plug (3 prongs in total) is corroded and basically missing. Our pool is about 30,000 gallons and has never had algae or any issues. The current salt cell was not throwing error codes, we just unplugged it to clean it for the season and discovered the issue. After working with the Jandy head office (3 people) and forcing someone to address why the center prong eroded away and why the cell life is only 2 year, I was informed that my 2007 panel needs to be replaced with one called APUREM power pack (about $500) because the new salt cells are not fully compatible with the old panels. I was told there is no way to modify the current panel and that my cell will have a short life and possible corrode again. Has anyone else been told that you have to upgrade your entire panel now to have your salt cell work completely? Why did Jandy create a new salt cell that can't work with the old system? Jandy already requires home owners to have the salt cell professionally installed or they will not honor the warranty (which is 1 year if you just replace the salt cell and 3 years if you put in a panel and cell....who puts in a new panel every 3 years!) While investigating this issue, it has been suggested that since I have to put in a new panel and cell, that I walk away from Jandy and put Pentair in (using their panel and cell) as they are more reliable. Anyone ever mixed these 2 brands? Thoughts on this? I really would like to have all Jandy products, but I am disappointed that they are asking me to upgrade the entire panel and I am worried that they will switch things again in a few years and I will be right back to this same place. Thank you for your help.

New to Site - Jandy SWG Help

Hi ez,

First of all, if you go to a Pentair salt system and you have Jandy automation, it can't all communicate with each other. Others here will have much better advice about that.

Regarding the special panel, I had been told something similar by an equipment guy who came out to fix something else. I just put that comment in the back of my head, but now it has more standing based on what you say Jandy says. I just hit 2 years with this cell and the old panel. It was throwing a couple different codes when the water temp was cooler, but has been error-free for the past month or so with water in the 60s. The prongs and connector look basically clean today, but I will keep a closer eye looking for deterioration based on your comments. Thanks.

And yes, the $500 panel upgrade scam stinks.

New to Site - Jandy SWG Help

Ezshopr, Welcome to TFP!

Do you have a spa? If so, I'd stick with Jandy so you get all the functionality of the automation. If you don't have a spa then I would install a CircuPool RJ 60 sized cell and run the SWG by itself. Pentair's warranty is only 60 days for a self install and there have been minor issues with those SWG's as well.

Yes - we do have a spa with a waterfall that flows into the pool. We also have solar heat. I am guessing everything is full automotive as we have set up the times for the spa and pool to clean and the percent of chlorine to be made etc. So it sounds like what the installer is suggesting about using Pentair is not correct as things will not work right. Wonder why he suggested it since we have to buy a new Jandy panel anyway so it wasn't to have us pay more money. Has anyone else spoken to Jandy or is anyone a Jandy rep on this forum that can tell me the year this new panel was designed? If we pay the $500 for the new panel will we have to upgrade again when they develop a new cell system or should we be set? Is Jandy able to do anything to help us so we can buy a part to fix the cell issue or is a new panel the only option? They are telling me the new panel is my only option. The prongs corroding does not sound safe. Thanks again for the help.

Our Jandy Pro Series TruClear started to show no flow and stopped making chlorine.
The plug that connects the salt cell to the Power Pack is (I believe) supposed to have 3 connector pins. Ours has no pins. They appear to have corroded away to nothing. This plug is called an RS485 connector in the manual. It looks like I need to replace the plug and receptacle. I have not found this particular electrical connector yet.
Anyone have ideas on where to find it?
The unit is 3 years old. We’ll call Kandy tomorrow to see if they will be helpful.

Thanks.

The plug looks to be a AMP CPC Series 1 206429 on the cable and 206430-1 on the bottom of the Power Pack.
I emailed Jandy.

I’m wondering if a more heavy duty plug might be in order.
Maybe something waterproof, as it does not appear the AMP CPC connectors used by Jandy are waterproof. It seems clear that the lack of a waterproof sealing gasket in the supplied connectors contributed to the corrosion and failure of the connectors.

Maybe something like this?

Or save some money and use something like an outdoor 3 conductor extension cord? Just cut the male and female ends off at an appropriate length and solder them in. The male and female connectors would have to be more heavy duty than the tiny connectors that have failed.
