Hello everyone -
New here, trying to learn more and troubleshoot - thank you for accepting my registration.

Quick question - how do I know if I have a 2-speed or a single-speed motor?
I have a Jandy JHP2.0, please see attached photos.

It's currently leaking and I already tried to replace the body gasket. I think I should have replaced the Mechanical Seal as well so I might try doing that too.
However, since the pump is already old (15 yrs), I'm thinking of just replacing it - hence, I'm curious if I should replace it with a single or 2-speed motor?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to TFP.

Your motor data plate shows you have a single speed 2HP pump.

Thank you very much, ajw22 -
Would you be able to recommend a good replacement for my existing pump?
Something that I can DYI and a compatible swap?

What is the advantage of having a single vs dual speed?
Thank you in advance.

You are in CA and have Federal and State restrictions on the pumps that can be sold to you.

You likely will need to buy a VS pump unless you can find a SS or 2S pump on the black market.

Do you have automation?

Effective July 19, 2021 CEC Title 20 1605.3(g)(6) requires any motor used for replacement dedicated-purpose pool pump motor on all residential and commercial applications and manufactured on or after July 19, 2021 that is greater than or equal to 0.5 THP be replaced with a variable speed motor.

No, I don't have any automation - but would love to have one if that's something I can do or add.

Since you have no automation and thus, no vendor lock in, the world is your oyster as far as variable speed pumps go. Many VSPs have their on-board controllers with their own timers, speed settings, wifi control, etc. Some even have auxiliary contacts to fire up other equipment on your pad. If you have an ultra basic pool setup, that may be the way to go. And even if it wasn't a requirement to go VSP, I'd go with one anyway. It's going to pay for itself in short order with CA electric prices. x2 on the equipment pad picture.

Thank you very much.
Quite overwhelming for a DYIer like me, although I'm pretty handy - i guess I'll just have to read more about it.
Much appreciated.

Post your equipment pad pics on this thread.

I just added it to my original post, is that sufficient?

Show us the ENTIRE equipment pad ... filter, heater, etc.

You have a pool light?

What is all the equipment you want to control with automation?

Added more photos, hopefully I got it this time.
Yes, we have one pool light, barely use it though.
Our kids are gone now, so this pool is barely used now.

I do not see any new pics.

I do see that you have a pool and spa that you did not list in your signature.

I guess you move valves manually to turn your spa on and off. If you get a VS pump you will also need to press some buttons on the pump to change the speed for the spa versus the pool.

Does your utility offer any rebates for installing a VS pump?

Consider the Black & Decker 3HP Energy Star Variable Speed Inground Swimming Pool Pump....

or Pentair IntelliFlo3 which can be app controlled so you can remotely adjust the pump for your pool or spa...

Added it again, hopefully, it shows up this time.
Thank you for your recommendations - I will definitely check these out.

If you want full pool/spa automation controlling your valves, VS pump, heater and lights then you want to replace the electrical panel with your timer with either a Pentair IntelliCenter system or a Hayward Omni PL System.

Decide if you want to go in that direction before you commit to the pump as you want the VS pump from the same vendor as the automation and to be compatible with it.

Sounds very nice but probably not going that route, I think I just want to make this work back as it was before - turn on and off on a schedule.
Again, we barely use this pool now that our kids are all gone.

Then get a VS pump and you will no longer need the mechnaical timer.

You connect the VS pump to constant power and program its on/off times and speeds on its control panel.
