Is this pool okay to drain (briefly)?

Good morning everyone,

I am pumping this pool out. Once empty, I would like to plug and pressure test main drains, and skimmer box outlet.

I have no information on the installation of this 6,000 gal pool, but it feels like a fiberglass build. We're on sand here. Is it acceptable practice to have it empty or near empty for a few hours while I get the testing done and cleaning finalized?

It does look like fiberglass, and if so, I would not lower below half, certainly not all the way. Besides the concern for the shell trying to move or pop "up" on you, the pressure from the base materials around the pool could cause the shell to collapse inward. The water helps to push the shell outwards. In cases like this when it must be emptied, the walls need to be properly braced across the width of the shell in about 3 places minimum.

Look for a sump tube.

You need to know the ground water level.

Are you near a body of water?

If yes, what is the elevation of the pool relative to the body of water?

Contact the building department and get the permits for the property.

Contact the builder to see what they can tell you.

Without recent knowledge of the water table height, I'd dig a nearby test pit. If you don't hit water however far down you want to drain, (plus some wiggle room) you're good to go if there's no flash floods while it's empty.

I wouldn't drain it unless you're going to have the gel coat redone. That's the only way I'd drain one. I'd have it done by a reputable builder with insurance so if it did pop on their watch, it'd be replaced.
