ok this will be my second year with an intex ring pool. i want better filtration , and i am a very handy? mod type guy lol . im thinking of getting one of the better cartridge filters, like a small hayward or pentaire, and just using the intex filter i have ( i think its 1200 gph ) without the "A" filter in it as the pump. what do you think about this idea ? i figure as long as it isnt a HUGE cartridge filter, ill still get the benefits of the bigger and surley better filter, while saving the money of a pump this year, mabye buying it next year. i have a 3 yr warranty on the filter as it is through amazon so i figure what do i have to lose? i guess thats what i am asking lol. what do i have to lose? thanks as always gentleman, your answers are always nothing short of professional...patient, and ectremely honest.

kd,

The bigger the filter the less often you have to clean it... But, keep in mind, that filters are made to collect stuff that falls into your pool... If you expect the larger filter is going to keep your pool from turning green, you are just wasting your money... Algae is a chemical issue, and has nothing to do with the size of your filter.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Don't ask me to find it, but I'm pretty sure I read a thread several years ago where someone did just what you plan. Or maybe they wanted to know how to convert the pump into a skimmer....

Anyway, a bigger filter is always a good idea. I have read here that those tiny Intex filters are pretty much shot after a week or two. But as mentioned, a filter won't keep algae away. That's chemistry. With proper chemistry and a larger filter, your water ought to be sparkling this year!

no this is in no way an attempt to overcome chemicals. (knocks on head) i had not one real issue last year using the tfp method. but im a bit ocd when it comes to clean water. and i keep thinking the bigger better filter will make a cleaner product. as well as not having to clean once a week. i think im gonna try it. ill post it to show my results!
