Is this some sort of check valve to keep water from draining completely out of the spa when it’s off? During normal pool ops the filtered water returns to the pool via “eyeballs” in the pool as well as a return line in the bottom of the spa. The spa water then flows over a mini waterfall back in to the pool to restart the cycle. It’s a single pump that runs the pool and spa. Just wondering what that expanded pipe section’s function is. Thanks for any input.

That is your spa make up line and a check valve to keep the spa from draining back to the pool when the pump is off.
