Is salt cell too small?

Hello all - Although this is my first post, I have been a lurker for awhile. Big thanks to everyone for the solid information. The SLAM process and other advice has been invaluable.

We moved into our home about 5 years ago, which had the existing pool, and have done pretty well managing to pool on our own. Specifics on pool are as follows:

Approx 40,000 gallons
Salt
Plaster Walls
Jandy Equipment with Aquapure 1400 salt generator

Over the last 5 years I have had to replace the salt cell twice. (Not counting the new one that was installed just prior to moving in). Even after SLAMing and keeping the water chem balanced, in the summer months (Alabama) we are having to set it at 80% or more to just get by (CYA at 70). It struggles to maintain 2-2.5ppm fc.

From what I read, the 1400 unit’s limit is 40,000 gallons (what I have) if used 24/7. I notice several are commenting that these should be sized at double what you have.

In the next year or so, I am considering upgrading the control components to modernize (smart type controls). If sticking with Jandy, I would have to change the board for the iAqualink system. Considering the salt generator sizing and wanting to upgrade things, I don’t necessarily need to stick with Jandy. Adding a second salt cell would require another control system, so I want to see what recommendations you have. (I am guessing the pool store advice will center around what they sell.)

Goals -
better salt cell effectiveness
Modern/smart pool interface which works with smart home (hopefully)
Bonus if I could keep the Jandy watercolor LEDs currently in the pool (4 lights)
I have Jandy pumps (waterfall, filter, cleaner), but I do not believe they are controller specific.
Heater probably is not controller specific.

Current thinking:

2 parallel cells (if I use Jandy, would need another controller)
A commercial unit with larger cell
Another brand with better controller electronics and 1 or 2 cells

Thanks all. Just planning ahead and potentially doing something when this current cell goes bad.

John

Your Jandy 1400 produces 1.25 lbs of chlorine per day which is enough to raise FC by 3.7 ppm if run @ 100% 24/7. If you're looking for a standalone system, check out the Circupool RJ-60. It claimed chlorine output is 3.1 lbs per day, enough to increase FC by 9.4 ppm per day. You would need to run it around 8-10 hours per day during peak months.

You may need to up the cya to the 80’s especially in the dog days of summer to help your swg along since it is under sized.
This combined with supplemental liquid chlorine once a week is what i have to do with my under sized unit.

I like this idea. I am thinking I can add this in parallel with the 1400, balance the load and extend the life of both.

I don’t know if there is any safety issue with running two, but I don’t think you need it if you have the rj60 as is produces twice as much as you’re current setup. I might supplement with liquid chlorine if I needed more than that .

This is what I ended up with. Jandy aquapure1400 (existing) with a circupool rj60. I can now keep the clorine levels consistent without adding anything (and do not have to run them at the level I was running the stand alone 1400). Been going for 3 weeks now and dialing in the levels. Thanks for the help.

If you rotate the RJ cell so the sagging portion is the lowest point, it’ll keep the blades submerged and less likely to be damaged.

Are those big sweeps sch40 PVC?
