Is my pump strong enough for my new pool?

N,

I never did see an answer to the following two questions...

Look between the mouth of the skimmer and the skimmer basket and see if you have any weir doors.. They are like a small door laying on its side. They are anchored at the bottom and the top floats up and down with the water.. Please let me know if you can see the doors??

What speed is your VS pump running?

Thanks,

Jim R.
Thank you, the pump is running on high when it is on. The contractor programmed it to run on high from 9 to 5 then turn off there is little movement even after the returns were adjusted. We tried to explain to the contractor last week that the equipment clearly was not working.

Backwash your filter.
Turn pump off.
Turn filter handle to backwash.
Turn pump on.
When the sight glass runs clear, turn pump off.
Turn handle to Rinse.
Turn pump on.
When the sight glass runs clear, turn pump off.
Turn handle to filter.

No doors in the skimmers and no suction at all right now with the pump running on high speed. Returns are pointed all the way up and the attached video shows the extent of the movement.
Thank you- even on high power it is not moving any where near as much as that shown in your photo. I will adjust the returns and see if that helps.
Returns are pointed all the way up and have little movement at all. No suction at all in skimmers and VS pump is on high. Is it possible that it is not getting enough power because it is running on 120v?

You are getting bombarded with good advice. Establishing some basics is the first step ;)

If you turn the drains valve to just the skimmers, and then the skimmer valve to just one skimmer, and you're not seeing water gushing into the skimmer, or coming out of the returns, either the filter or something in the water path is blocked. Your filter should have a BYPASS setting. With the pump off, turn the big handle on the filter to bypass, and then turn the pump back on. If you get water shooting out of the returns, then you know the filter is blocked up. If you still get no water, something fundamental is messed up, and you should call your contractor and have him come fix the system, and explain how it's supposed to be working.

Unfortunately, we don't know how to backwash the filter. The contractor has not returned to show us how to use the equipment.

You are being assisted by the best-of-the-best here. But do have one observation - in the initial top down pictures of the skimmers, there is a lot of black gorilla type tape on the side walls, inside. And neither of the baskets seem to be all the way down in the skimmer. Why the tape? And are you 100% sure that none got loose and sucked into the pipes under
Look into the skimmer mouth to see if you have a weir door.

We do not have these doors on our skimmers.
You do in the pic you posted.

You can reach in to push it up/down and it should swing freely. (Except that it wants to float).

If the sides are clogged with debris it may be temporarily stuck and contributing to the other issues.

You should adjust the pool water level to not be higher than the mid point of the skimmer. See if that impairs anything else.
The weir doors must be installed. Many PB's have no clue on pool maintenance. They see the doors as a nuisance as they can stick if not properly installed and customers complain.

Get those items fixed and run the pool with minimal to no suction from the main drain. Then see about the pump. You have more pumping power than you need. In fact, I see it as a travesty to have installed a single speed pump. New pools should have variable speed pumps.

Y = Flow in GPM.

X = Pump Speed.

You now have two approximate formulas directly relating the pump speed (N) and the flow rate (Q) for the SP2610X15XE pump operating on the system defined by H = 0.01 * Q²:

To find the Flow (Q in GPM) for a given Speed (N in RPM):
Q ≈ 0.0204 * N

To find the Speed (N in RPM) needed to achieve a desired Flow (Q in GPM):
N ≈ 49.1 * Q

Thank you very much. The pump is variable speed but the pool builder programmed it to run on high for 8 hours then turns off now he won't come back to teach us how to use the equipment.

The bullets he listed in the reply is how you backwash the filter:

Backwash instructions:
Turn pump off.
Turn filter handle to backwash.
Turn pump on.
When the sight glass runs clear, turn pump off.
Turn handle to Rinse.
Turn pump on.
When the sight glass runs clear, turn pump off.
Turn handle to filter.

These guys here can teach you your equipment. I wouldn't trust anyone else and many have helped me with my equipment over the years. Just ask and follow their directions.

And thanks for the pics of the skimmer without the baskets. Still an odd question about why the tape, which your builder can answer if he ever responds - but make it a less important question. Nothing jumps out as a problem in the pictures, which is great.
