Hello, everyone. My saltwater generator (SWG) is displaying a low salt reading and to inspect the cell error. I conducted a sodium chloride test and got a reading of 3200, while the SWG showed 2500. I've never experienced calcium buildup on the cell when I go to clean it and I clean it at least twice a year. The pool isn't used very often, especially after September, and it's usually just me using it. Is it time to replace the SWG?

I conducted a sodium chloride test
How old is your K-1766...salt reagents tend to go bad more quickly than others. When they are bad, you get a higher result on your salt test. I had a reagent set that was "unexpired," but it read high and I knew it. Got new reagents and the results were lower.

What is the brand and model of the SWG?
How do you clean it? If you use muriatic acid, that is one of the quickest ways to kill the cell...it removes the ruthenium oxide that makes chlorine. Suspend the use of acid in the future.
Post any pictures of stickers on the cell.
Likely dead...but let's troubleshoot.

On the cleaning side, follow this in the future:

This is the basic information we need to know in diagnosing a problem:

  • Report all diagnostic readings when you..
    • Move the switch from auto to off and check all of the readings.
    • Move the switch back to auto and recheck the readings.
    • Move the switch to off for a minute and then back to auto and recheck the readings.
  • What are the first seven characters of the cell and box serial numbers?
  • What is the actual salinity and how are you measuring it?

Good catch on the SWG type, I'm on PC, hard to see...my bad.

  • What is the actual salinity and how are you measuring it?

His test kit may have old reagents and testing higher...

I stopped and ran the pump after each setting and waited for it to finish priming on each one.

I'm not sure what you mean by the actual salinity. I'm using the Taylor K-1766 kit for sodium chloride. The agents are less than a year old and are kept in the house out of the AZ heat.

I'm still getting the white flakes in the test tube with the salt test. Are they not supposed to be there?

Thanks for the reply. If the cell is faulty, would altering the settings make any difference? Would I find the instructions to make those changes in the manual? Should I just buy a new cell and call it a day? I forgot to add in my previous post that I do clean the cell with a solution of water and acid. I will switch to using vinegar from now on.

Changing to T9 makes it read the salinity at 1.4 times higher, which can give you some more life from a failing cell.

2,500 ppm becomes 3,500 ppm.

The cell is 7 years old, which is a typical life.

I made the changes to the standard and T-9. These are the readings now:
1.90, 22, 31.9, 0.00, 60p, -0.00, AL-0, r1.59, T-9

Seems I might have done something wrong. Are those metric measurements?

I checked the readings this morning for T-9 and changed it to standard.
3.20, 74, 26.8, 4.78, 56P, -3600, no changes
It seems your suggestion is working. (y) Is it acceptable to keep using the T-9 setting for a T-15, or should I just go ahead and order a new cell instead?

Probably time to get a new cell.

You can run this one to end of life or remove it and use it as a spare if needed.
I’d echo this statement. When I’ve done this for customers to buy some time for them I’ve had cells last 6 months and others last 3. You’re buying time to get a new cell, it’s not a permanent fix as the cell will continue to degrade.

I was wondering if the T-15 model is necessary for the size of my pool. The pool is approximately 10' x 30' x 5' at the deepest point. Would a T-9 be sufficient?

Thanks for the info. I haven't found any other information on the company, Super Pro. I am trying to find out how long the warranty is and if there are any reviews or complaints.
