Is a 36sqft and a 3/4 hp a good combo?

I need to replace my de filter since its probably from 1988. I think its time lol. Im going to stick with de and have heard to buy as big as you can afford. Ill probaby stick to a 36 unless someone sggest its not big enough for my pool 17k gals. The 3/4 hp pump is currently what i have for the pool and spa filtration.

Also does anyone recommend a pentair over a hayward or vice versa?

C,

I believe that your answer would depend on how often you backwash, or teardown and clean, your current filter?

The larger the filter the less often you will have to backwash/clean the thing..

I have two pools that I maintain that have DE filters. Both are much smaller than 17K and one has a 48" filter and the other a 60" filter.

I never backwash, and only clean them twice a year. This is mainly due to the fact that they both have variable speed pumps..

Your 3/4 HP pump should work just fine.. I personally like variable speed, or 2-speed pumps, to save on the old electrical bill, but this also would depend on how long you currently run your pump, and your electrical rate.

Thanks for posting,

I might look into getting a 48" or 60" filter then (I do have to clean my filter every 4 months or so). Does a larger filter (60") require a stronger motor?

I have heard the variable speed pumps come in two ways (where you set the speed manually,or change it manually at the pump) or fully automatic (when it senses the water flow and automatically adjusts the pump speed to maintain). I have been looking into maxflo VS for $770 on amazon (i think the motor is included).
