Dear Pool People. I am an old guy with a small backyard unground plaster pool. Trying to keep it perfect. So far so good, 7 years good. I have a large cartridge filter, chlorine tablet feed and ozone generator. Not sure the ozone does anything worth while. Like to use calcium based shock chlorine to keep perfect balance. Mech. engr. and technical freak. Want it right and to know the "how" it works. Live in South, AL. Have a heat pump to heat. Use pool April til Oct.

Cal-hypo is a poor choice for sanitation because the chlorine you actually need is bound to calcium, which you probably don't need. Excessive calcium levels can lead to scaling in the pool that is definitely something you want to avoid. The other type of stabilized chlorine, which goes in your tab feeder, is bound to cyanuric acid. CYA is very important for pools, but again, you will add too much trying to get the necessary chlorine.

Ozone perhaps has a place in indoor pools, along with UV, but in an outdoor pool, you're actually fighting with yourself as the ozone consumes chlorine.

We recommend testing yourself with a proper test kit. Test Kits Compared
The only sources of chlorine that don't carry along troublesome by-products are liquid chlorine, or the use of a salt water chlorine generator. A SWCG would be perfect for you, and a long swim season.
Pool Care Basics

TFP methods are based on the relationship between CYA and FC. FC/CYA Levels
Keep your FC at proper levels based on your CYA level, and you'll have a crystal clear pool with very little expense or headache.
