I was reading and old post, where several people recommended the Intex SWCG system and I have found a good deal on it. I did not order it yet because I downloaded the user manual and it says I need 240lbs of salt for my 21' round above ground pool. Six 40lb bags would be about $200, based on salt prices on Amazon. Does this sound right?? That's more than the unit costs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
You can get water softener salt at Home Depot or Walmart for less than $5 per lb bag. Make sure it is plain, no additives.

Not everything is viable to be purchased through Amazon.

The first year I had my salt water pool I bought pool salt from the pool store at about 8 bucks a bag. This year I wised up and used this stuff. Got it for about 4 bucks a bag at Walmart. Dissolved in less than a day and have had zero issues. Save yourself some money and may buy the salt for water softeners. As other posters have said, just make sure it has no additives.

Absolutely loving the new Intex sand filter and SWCG. The pool is clearing up beautifully. I'm reading up on maintaining the pool since adding the Salt Water system, including the "Water Balance for SWGs" in the pool school. Is there a problem using liquid shock or the 3" pucks/tablets is a floating dispenser? Just wondering since there is no reference to them. I know it shouldn't be necessary since using the SWCG, but I'm running the SWCG in boost mode to raise up my FC and was wondering if these would give it a hand to get the FC up a little bit. If it's recommended not to use them, I'll just have to wait for the FC to rise on it's own with the SWCG.
 
We generally advise starting and balancing a SWG pool as a bleach pool and then turning on the SWG to maintain the FC. So you're a step ahead. Be aware that the pucks add CYA. So if you already set your CYA to target, you will likely end up over with pucks.
 
You should establish your FC with bleach first, then dial in the SWG to maintain the FC level.

What size is the SWG? The 15000 gallon unit will need to run about 12 hours to cover a 3.5ppm FC loss in 13500 gallons.

Where is your CYA level?

I put in some stabilizer to bump up the CYA and have the filter and SWCG (boost mode) running non-stop for the past 5 hours. I will keep it running for at least another 5 hours. I will check again at that time.
 
Next time use bleach to get to target. The SWG cell has a certain lifespan hours, the less you use it the longer it lasts.

Is this the 15000 gallon model?
