Hi all! Thanks in advance for any advice. Pool has been open about a month and just last weekend I started hearing an intermittent rattling in my pump. I check and cleared out any debris in all baskets. I separated the basket and housing on pump and checked for any debris in the impeller, looked good. For the past week the rattling is getting more persistent. It takes a while for it to start from first turning the pump on. It can go even an hour or two before starting up. I was thinking if the impeller was loose or damaged, the rattling would be constant. Rather, it may rattle for 20-30 seconds, run quiet for 5-15 minutes, then rattle again. The pressure is good, no leaks or air coming through. Pump is level. Any ideas what I should check next? Thanks again!

Welcome to TFP! Your signature is blank which makes it kind of tough to respond to questions. See my signature as an example. Feel free to post some pics of your pump and equipment as well. Also confirm for us that your pump pot is always running full of water and there is no interruption of water flow from the poolside skimmer or weir.

Pool Care Basics

Thank you for the replies! Yes, very new here. Updated my profile with pool details, is that the signature? I've only just taken over the care and maintenance responsibilities of the pool last summer so many terms are new to me but Im learning and more than happy to do my research.

As for pump, it came with the house that I bought 14 years ago so yes, I understand it's on the older side. It's a Jacuzzi Magmum 1000. It was serviced once since I've owned it about 8 years again and ran great until a couple weeks ago as I mentioned.

Pot always full, not even a bubble after starting up. There are no debris or obstructions that I can find in skimmer or baskets or any of the openings I can easily reach.

As for bond wire, after I looked up what that is, I found there doesn't seem to be one connected! So while that can't be the cause of the rattle, I suspect that will be my next problem to solve. I'm posting so pics of the pump and will try to upload a short video with sound so the rattling can be heard.

It ran 2 hours this morning without rattling and then it rattled intermittently for about another hour at which point it became a more consistent...every 3-5 minutes it rattles for about 10-15 seconds. I turned it off for an hour and then it ran for a hour quietly before the rattling returned. The motor is warm but not hot to the touch.

Thanks again!

Does the rattle sound like little rocks/pebbles banging together or is it a metallic sound?

Once you fill out your signature and list your pump specs, we can further assist.
See Marty's @mknauss link above for info on creating your signature, then follow my link below to edit the signature.

That wiring doesn't look to right. The liquid tight on the right goes down under the back bottom of the motor but then it looks like it continues past the left is possibly metal emt pipe. Hard to see from these pictures but maybe that metal emt pipe is touching the motor end cap. Also the wiring from the motor left side is exposed looks like a broken 90° electrical pull box.

Thank you for the how-to on the signature. As I keep learning I'll keep adding 😊.

It's hard to see but there is a good 2 inches of clearance between the pump motor and metal pipe. I did notice the broken electrical box too. I need to add that to my list with the bond wire. I don't know how long ago the pump was installed. It's been there at least 14 years. The previous owners left me the Installation & Operation manual but no receipt or service invoice telling me when it went in or by who.

I can't seem to upload the video I took with sound. I'll try to post it to YouTube and post a link or log in from my computer rather than phone. The sound is not quite like rocks slamming around nor metallic, more like a vibrating hum...I need to get sound up for you guys! Once it gets going, as in once the sound starts after the pump has been running awhile, it almost sounds cyclical, like it's revving up and takes off, is gone for a minute and the starts all over. Oddly enough I had it running for about an hour then managed to manually vacuum for about 45 minutes, backwash, and it ran about another hour before starting up...longest it's gone all week. Not sure if that is a clue but trying to think of everything and anything and get a good handle on what I'm doing.

What you describe sounds possibly what I ran into last year which was coming from the wet end of a Hayward sp. Was very odd sounding and had a corse kind of sound sort of something out of balance. Well I took apart the wet end and found a stone jamed in the outer edge of the impler as I have pictured.Screenshot_20220715-011027_Gallery.jpg
