IntelliConnect Install problems

my installer spent a fair amount of time
Setting up my system yesterday and we had a lot of trouble. Was hoping you all could help.

my setup is a single stage penatir pump, 400k btu pentair heater (new), intellichlor system, and intellibright lights.

I believe the pump and chlorinator were running off a 15amp breaker and the intellibright was borrowing power from a gfci outlet in the poolbox when I used them (rarely). Sorry, I’m not electrical savvy.

The heater was installed yesterday (no gas line so not on yet). He then wired the intelliconnect but it’s not working. Relay 1- the pump (single speed so it needs a relay).

I believe the intellichlor needs a separate power supply? That’s probably why it wasn’t working - it is connected by the RS432 to the intelliconnect. But the wire colors didn’t match the manual so he guessed.

He then Hooked up the heater (gasline not run yet so haven’t tested it).

the intellibright lights went to relay 2, but wouldn’t turn on. I heard a click to turn it on when used through the app, but lights never came on. I’m guessing the 15amp breaker is way too small for all of this?

now the intelliconnect is completely off and won’t turn on. It didn’t trip the 15Amp breaker, but maybe it blew it trying to turn on the lights? (I didn’t run them with the pump on).

can I just change the 15 amp to a 30? Also, my installer was surprised each relay needed it’s own power supply in addition to the main supply to the inteliconnect so he used jump wires.

The pump is a 240 and lights 120. So they need separate power supplies?

Welcome to TFP.

You cannot simply change CBs up size without confirming the wire size can handle the load. CBs are sized to protect the wiring from overheating not the devices.

240V pumps need a 20A CB.

Pumps need a dedicated CB.

It sounds like you have a lot wrong with your installation and need a more knowledgable licensed electrician doing the work.

The pump was running of a double 15amp circuit breaker.

not sure why we’re having issues with the same equipment. I’ll call pentair tomorrow

@bubby4113 Hoping these photos of my setup provide some help. I do need to say that I am not an electrician, so take my analysis and comments with a grain of salt

Here is a view of my setup for some perspective.


Up close to the power area there are 3 boxes. One is the power distribution (Grey, top right), IntelliConnect (Top Left) and IntelliChlor Power (center).


Here is a view of the power distribution. I have 3 breakers. I have 240v coming into the box and going directly to the pump, 240v going to the IntelliConnect and 120v feeding the GFCI outlet and lights.


Here if the view with the cover removed. The black box on the bottom is a surge arrestor.


Here is a photo inside the IntelliConnect. This looks busy, but that is partially because when the electrician first set this up, he had my pump going through Relay 1. That was a problem as described in my review post when the power goes out. But basically, with the way its wired now, I have 120 coming in to power the device and 120 going out to the lights through Relay 2.

The smaller wires to the left are the RS232 leads from the IntelliFlo (Pump) and IntelliChlor PowerCenter. The IntelliChlor is powered via the PowerCenter and a special cable designed just for that purpose.



Just to close this picture out, I have two lights (IntelliBrite) connected to the one Relay (Relay 2) and they are both wired to this junction box.


Hoping that this provides some useful details. I will say then when I reached out to Pentair through the IntelliConnect interface for help, they were very helpful and gave me specific instructions to tell my electrician to address the issue with the pump being powered through the IntelliConnect relay. They advised that the IntelliFlo should not be connected to the relay.
