Pentair Intellichlor IC-40
The Intellichlor owner’s manual give the following water conditions.

TFP recommends different levels. I’m concerned about their warning regarding FC above 4.0. Should I follow the manual?

FreeChlorine: 2.0-4.0 ppm. Above 4.0 ppm may cause corrosion of metal components
Combined Chlorine (Chloramines): None (super chlorinate to remove all chloramines)
pH: 7.2 - 7.8 (USE MURIATIC ACID to lower pH and Soda Ash to raise pH.)
Cyanuric Acid: 30-50 ppm
Total Alkalinity: 80-120
Calcium Hardness: 200-400
TDS (includes salt): 3000 minimum to 5700 to 6000 maximum ppm
Salt: 3600 - 4500 ppm (ideal 3600 ppm
Metals (Copper, Iron, Manganese): none
Nitrates: none

The short answer is follow TFP recommendations. They are based on the latest science. Who knows how long ago those Pentair recommendations were written and how many corporate lawyers had to approve it.

The Pentair recommendations will work ok, most of the time. The TFP recommendations have been proven to work better.

If you want a longer answer there are threads here over the years discussing the chemistry and science.

Thanks! The short answer works for me.

Another question...I’m in the design phase now. My pool will be about 17,000 gallons. I read that you should get a big enough SWG to support double the number of gallons.

So, the IC40 should work, but about getting the IC60? Too big? If I’m spending over $100k for the pool, what’s another $200?

Not sure there is any downside to an IC60 on a 17K pool. Partly depends what your pump run time will be. If you would run an IC40 at 30% then you would run an IC60 at 20%.
