This will then get me to a standard 1.5" PVC all around and rid of the 40mm Intex connections once and for all.

If you are going to do it lets do it all the way

Turn your intake/suctions into returns and install a skimmer for your suction side... then you will have a skimmer and 2 returns.. I also connected the return that your using now and made it a suction for a "the pool cleaner" but you can also just cap the current return..
