Hello All,

I have been setting up my Hayward filter for years and this year I just completely blanked. As you can tell from the picture I installed the spring coil in the middle instead of the end and now the darn thing is stuck and won't release. Additionally the clamp is upside down. I burned through the original screw head trying again and again to get it to release. Any suggestions? Or did I just do something that means I have to buy a new filter?

jkb,

I really have no idea what to do... :(

My guess is that the band is no longer usable.. I think I would buy a new band, and then take an angle grinder to the old one.. Not near the filter itself, but right where the bands make 'loops' on either end of the spring..

I would also expect that things will go "pop" when you finish the cut.. Might want to use something to temporarily hold the band together as you cut.

Sorry for you loss,

Jim R.

jkb,

If you consider the band as bad anyway, you can't make it any worse by trying to use a pair of vice grips to see if the threaded bolt will turn.. Off the top of my head I can't remember what turns and what does not turn???

Thanks,

Jim R.

The threaded stud doesn't turn so you will need to cut this apart. I would cut the spring that is jammed in there and you might be able to salvage the band, IF you can get the replacement spring by itself. I assume you still have the nut and washers to use if you can get a new spring.
