Inefficient use of chlorine?

Sometimes when balancing the chemicals at the beginning of the season, I get lazy. Sure, I'll pour in enough chlorine to get the FC to shock level for the CYA. But then maybe I get busy and skip a day then pour in enoguh chlorine to get back to shock level and keep repeating this bad habit. Then a week goes by and I wonder, "dang, if I would have been more diligent with the SLAM, I bet this wouldn't have taken so much chlorine!"

Is it more efficient to SLAM properly or do you think it uses the same amount of chlorine overall, but when doing the SLAM properly it gets results faster?

The faster the SLAM is done, the chances of using less chlorine is better. But the better question is what happened that caused you to need to SLAM? Its way
efficient to jjst maintain the correct chlorine level so you never need to SLAM.

When I open the pool for summer and take the cover off, the water is normally grey/brown/black. My first step is to SLAM during that opening process. Is it normal to SLAM after ending the winterization?
You probably have to open later than me but mine is pretty clear on opening in march. If yours is brown/black then its a sign you waited too long to open or didnt close late enough.
