After reading about adding DE to a sand filter to improve filtration, I decided to try it. Thanks to TFPC my pool has always been crystal clear (looks like air) but I did notice some small 'specks' floating in the water at night in the glow of the pool light. You wouldn't really notice them during the day but I wanted to see what would happen.
I slowly added DE last night, enough to raise the pressure from 16psi to 17psi; it took 3 cups of DE.
After getting up this morning, my filter was at 19psi. I checked it again after work this evening and it was at 20.5psi, so I went ahead and backwashed it (and it's back to the 15-16psi range).
After turning on the pool light, I'm amazed at how clear my water is. Like I said, my water has always been sparkling like a crystal, but you can actually tell a slight difference with the light on at night.
I'd get a photo for comparison but no camera out there will adequately capture the difference. Oh well.
Give it a go if you get a chance. I was impressed.
$25 for 25lbs of DE from my local pool store...*shudder*...only time I've ever gone in there other than needing an o-ring.
